2006 Sonata ESC Off Light

The dash lights for the "ESC Off" and the ABS just came on. Just driving, no indication of any problem. I have about 30k miles on the car. Anyone know what is going on?

Well this seems a little odd but at 40,000 miles on my 2006 Sonata the ESC/OFF ABS light came on. No, the switch hasn't been turned off, I checked that. The light does not show up when the car is first started, it comes and goes while driving. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the brakes.

I had the same problem. I was able to get my Sonata to the dealer when the lights came on. It ended up being the brake switch had to be replaced. I also believe there is a technical bulletin for this but only covers the 2007 Sonata. Have the dealer check out the brake switch.

this is so frustrating! come on hyundai u all need to get it together. these sorts of things should be sorted out by now. i own a 2006 sonata and i just started experiencing problems with this light coming on. im almost scared to drive my car. i was on my way to celebrate my birthday and this freaking light came on and scared me almost half to death. i dont care if this is a common problem, there should be more information on this before you purchase a hyundai. just needed to vent.

I have the same problem. The lights will go out when you stop the vehicle, then restart. They will then come back on after driving a short time. Also, I have had brake problems with my car from day one. Have had it back to the dealer so many times I have finally give up. When applying the brakes, and especially if the weather is cool, it sounds like the car is coming apart.

same problem!! just came on here looking to see if anyone could help me .. im at 26k right now and it comes on and off..just talked to a hyndai service center rep. and he said it may be that my brake lights are out (which i doubt) so im going to just take it in to the dealer next week ...

I have an '06 Sonata at roughly 70k miles and this just started happening to me, as well. Each mechanic I've brought it to says I'm crazy, to learn to live with it, or that there's nothing they can do. But yes, with both my ABS and ESC Off lights on, I'm a little frightened to drive!

If this is such a common problem, have there been any dealer recalls???

  • Anonymous Jan 06, 2009

I have the same problem. The ESC switch was fixed at 20k, and came back on this morning. I am now at 70k and it cost $65 to fix. If you ignore it, the brakes lights won't work, so I was told. Why tie it to something so critical? It truly is a faulty switch, not something wrong with my ESC. Gotta love that Hyundai technology.

  • bostonllm Jan 07, 2009

I'mi at 20,000 miles and the ESC off light and ABS light came on for no reason. What's up?

  • mixjunk Feb 25, 2009

Mine is even better. My ESC system applys the right side break all on its own without any warning. Happened to me yesterday going 60mph almost got rear ended by an F150. The breaks are applied and the wheel is almost jerked out of your hand. Scares the **** out of you. Of course when this happens your break light don't come on so... Been to the dealership multiple times.. they fix it(?) everytime...only has 16,000 miles. They say they don't know what to do. Maybe its time to get a lawyer.

I have a 2006 Sonata, and my ESC light and the ABS light came on and then my power steering was not fully functioning and it was hard to steer. I checked my pulley bekt in the morning and come to find out I had almost an inch of play and realized that I needed to have it adjusted. I went to a few stations to have them look at it and they said my Tension pulley and the belt will have to be replaced. Come to find out that the tension pully is spring loaded and it would cost about $250.00 to fix. I will get back to the Board with this after I have it changed and fixed.

2006 hyundai sonata, ESC light comes on but not ABS. After coming to a stop, and starting to accelerate, the engine light and ESC light come on. Then the car acts like it is in neutral, in that the brakes and steering don't work properly. Car is still running, all electrical functions work. Sputters and jerks and have to coast to the side of the road and restart, then the engine light will usually stay on for days. will do this every day for weeks, then nothing for a couple of months.

The same problem as listed below but did you know that there is a safety recall because of this? It is posted on the NHTSA website. I have a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. I called Hyundai and they told me to take it to the dealership and they would fix it. When I got there I was advised that since Hyundai has not started their notification campaign, they will not fix it! The NHTSA has has this posted since April 14, 2009, when do you think they should start the campaign. My brake lights are out, I cannot shift out of gear without pushing the shift release button and all they can do is apologize for my inconvenience. WOW!

same as above with the ABS and ESC light coming on for no reason

  • freeky 1 May 06, 2009

on my 06 sonata, the abs/esc light comes on every once in a while, but when the eng. is shut off, and restarted, it goes out for a while, and eventenly comes back on,but I do not have any problems as of yet, it still drives fine and brakes good, whats wrong with this thing??

  • Anonymous Apr 26, 2012

Did anyone find a resolution on this? My '06 Sonata had both lights come on yesterday but they are off today. I had an issue a couple of months ago with my steering not working when I was braking and exiting the highway (dealer told me to bring it in next time it happens....ooo....***....) and now I wonder if the 2 issues are related.

I'm also only getting 19 mpg, with new tires, new brakes, and highway driving. Anyone else having these problems or know of any solutions?

    Many thanks.

I have a 2006 sonata and my esc light just started coming on within the last month. When it comes on my cruise control does not work nor do my brake lights. I took my car to the dealership today. Spent 2 hours of my work time waiting. Was rest assured my car was fixed (brake light switch replaced) only to drive home in the pouring rain with my 4 yr old daughter and the light came back on within 10 minutes of driving it. It is terribly unsafe and scares me to death. I am a single mom and do not have unlimited funds to just throw around on a car to see if we can find an answer. I truly need an answer as I have just told my family.. crudely... that if something happens to me and my daughter, to go after hyundai...

I had the same problem at 35,000 miles. I would be driving and suddenly the ESC Off Light would illuminate. It would disappear if the car was turned off, only to reappear after a few miles of driving. It turned out to be a faulty "brake light switch."

My 2006 Sonata does this frequently. I just had the brakes repaired (pads, calipers, rotors machined) four days ago, and the light came on last night and then again this morning. I was told by the dealer's service department that it would have to be checked, and that the ABS brakes don't have much to do with the regular brakes.

Also, the ESC button only turns on the ESC light, not the ABS light.

Had the same problem with the intermittent ABS/ESC light. Took it to the dealer at 35,000 miles and they replaced the steering wheel position sensor under warranty. 30,000 miles later and the problem has not reoccured.

I had a similar problem. At first they couldn't figure it out - they tried replacing this and that.
Finally, Hyundia released a fix for this problem which involved trial and error replacing of parts until the problem goes away. Replacing the accelerator did the trick and my car has been great ever since.

I did not have to pay for any of these repairs. It is covered by Hyundai's warranty, and I didn't even buy my used car at the dealership.

Is there any chance you accidently hit the button? There's a button on the far left of the console that turns Electronic Stability Control (ESC) off, and that may be what happened.

If there's no chance of that, then try the old battery disconnect and see if it happens again. Then the dealer may be your only option unless someone else has an idea.

What does the ESC light on my Hyundai entourage mean? what does the acronym even stand for?

Your owner's manual says = Electronic Stability Control. Optimum driving safety now has a name : ESC, the Electronic Stability Control. ESC recognizes critical driving conditions, such as panic reactions in dangerous situations, and stabilizes the vehicle by wheel-individual braking and engine control intervention with no needfor actuating the brake or the gas pedal. ESC adds a further function known as Active Yaw Control (AYC) to the ABS, TCS, EBD and ESC functions. Whereas the ABS/TCS function controls wheel slip during braking and acceleration and, thus, mainly intervenes in the longitudinal dynamics of the vehicle, active yaw control stabilizes the vehicle about its vertical axis. This is achieved by wheel individual brake intervention and adaptation of the momentary engine torque with no need for any action to be taken by the driver. ESC essentially consists of three assemblies : the sensors, the electronic control unit and the actuators. Of course, the stability control feature works under all driving and operating conditions. Under certain driving conditions, the ABS/TCS function can be activated simultaneously with the ESC function in response to a command by the driver. In the event of a failure of the stability control function, the basic safety function, ABS, is still maintained.

ABS and ESC off light came on. I cannot shut it off by making or breaking the switch. What does the ABS and ESC have to do with each other?

ABS = anti-lock braking system, ESC = electronic stablity control... they both use wheel speed sensors to function, so if you have a bad wheel speed sensor they both will throw codes and not operate.

ESC ABS light stays on is there a recall on 2006 Hyundai Sonata for this vin#5NPEU46F46H048142?

if there is a recall the dealer will send you papers to inform you, what probably happened is you hit the brakes really hard, locked them up and it blew the abs relay.

ESC not working

Your question is kind of jumbled, but I believe I had a similar problem. The ESC would not function properly and the button on the dash would not work sometimes. I took it to the dealership and they had to replace a speed sensor on one of my tires. That fixed the issue and maybe it would also fix yours. Hope this helps.

Check Engine light and ESC OFF light

I had an issue where the ABS and ESC lights would go on and wouldn't turn off unless I restarted the car (sometimes they would light up again even if I had restarted). This was because the speed sensor was broken on my back tire. After the dealership replaced it, (under the 36,000 mile warranty) all was good and I have yet to see the lights come back on.

Summary:
Issue: ABS & ESC would not turn off
Solution: Replaced broken speed sensor on tire
