I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee. I'm having a problem starting the car. I just replaced the battery and the alternator. This morning the car started up immediately, I went to the store, was in the store for less than 3 minutes, got into the car and tried starting it but it wouldn't turn over. I sat for 20 minutes and periodically tried starting it, finally, it did start. This is exactly what was happening prior to changing the battery & alternator. Also, sometimes while driving, it stalls out. I then have to pull over to the side of the road and restart it, it usually will start right up. Help!
Just for clarification purposes, when you say, "it wouldn't turn over", does that mean that the engine was turning over but would not start and run, or there was nothing there at all, not even a noise trying to start? Sorry, but for some reason this gets to be confusing due to a difference in terminology between person asking question and mechanic answering it. Personally I prefer or use the following terminology: 1) engine cranks over but won't start. ( indicating starter engaging and engine turning over but won't run.) 2) engine does not crank over. ( turn key to start, and nothing happens other than dash lights up. No sounds under hood. ) Thanks.Just for clarification purposes, when you say, "it wouldn't turn over", does that mean that the engine was turning over but would not start and run, or there was nothing there at all, not even a noise trying to start? Here is what I suggest. Remove the battery from the vehicle and take it to an autoparts store. Most parts stores wll test the condition of the battery for free. They can tell you whether the battery is any good or not. Then, if you find the battery is bad and replace it, take the vehicle back to the autoparts store and have them check the alternator output. This is also a free service that most stores offer. That will give you peace of mind that both components are working properly. Really sorry for your trouble and best wishes.
is the alternator charging? What kind of voltage reading are you getting when engine is running? If alternator is not charging, your vehicle relies on battery to stay running, after battery runs to low, it will stall.Continuing this may result in replacing battery also. Have a load test performed on battery before replacing.
have someone else check your alternator with a voltmeter positive probe to the battery pole on backside of alternator. ground probe to a good engine ground. while running you should see at least 12.35 volts.any less it is bad
i had the same thing happen last year. it was a bad chip. i had to take it to the dealership to have the chip replaced. it cost about 200.00. it was not a big deal at all. after that though, my freeze plug busted and my alternator went out. but now all those problems are fixed. how come when you get a car paid off, everything starts going wrong??
