1997 Jeep Cherokee Country Logo
Anonymous Posted on Jan 10, 2011

I have a 1997 Grand jeep cherokee, manual 2.5TD. Under hard accleration a get a trail of white ish smoke trailing behind me. If i acclerate without not bringing the turbo in ( i presume) there is no smoke at all. Iam not sure when the turbo should kick in. Would thisbe the turbo? or something more sinister. Is the turbo easy to change? Thx Justin

Turbos do not cause smoke they increase air pressure through the exhaust to the intake.
Is it white smoke or steam? Check your oil level, see if it's too high, and/or you might have some valve stem seals that are not sealing at the point the turbo cuts into inches. Otherwise, make sure it's not overheating, coolant-wise. I wouldn't go after the turbo unless the oil feed line to the turbo, the seals inside the turbo are breaking apart. But you have to remember that the turbo is constantly turning, so if that was the case, you would have smoke right from the get-go.

    Hi Kris
Thankyou for your reply, eased my worries a little. I lose no oil, the temp stays the same around the 90 mark. Its white smoke, well its more noticable at night when the car head lights behind me hi-light it more. For example if iam in 5th gear doing 70mph and i put my foot down quite hard i get the smoke. If i press the pedal to acclerate lightly no smoke at all. Its the same with pulling away, hard = smoke, soft = nothing.

Sounds like turbo isn't working. Check your waste gate. See if it's in the closed position. If it is, you're burning raw fuel.
Question: Is your fuel consumption down?

  • Anonymous Jan 10, 2011

I did a run yesterday of 200miles and i averaged 31mpg. I would say yes the consumption is not what it should be. I also noticed it struggled up hills and i had to drop down a gear or 2. This is the first 4x4 i have owned but now that you mention the turbo is not working, When the turbo 'kicks' in would there not be a surge of power if you can get this with a big 4x4. It feels like nothing happens when i acclerate hard. I have only changed 1 turbo before and that was fairly easy, are these complicated to change?

And again thankyou for your replay

Check the vacuum hoses going to the turbo and underneath the turbo. Make sure they are plugged in because the turbo itself usually does not break down too often unless the bearing is spun. Your waste gate is either electronic or vacuum controlled. It is cheaper to replace the waste gate than the turbo itself.
PS- You should have a surge of power when the turbo kicks in. You should be able to take off like a light.
Also, check with alldata.com, punch in your year of vehicle, get the right engine, and check for any recalls of the turbo or actuator assembly for the waste-gate. Might be covered under a recall. Could be worth checking.

1997 jeep cherokee country white smoke under hood, runs good, does not run hot

Interesting.
White smoke is usually burning coolant.
You should be loosing a fluid, something has to be burning to make the smoke.
It could be a very slight drip onto the hot exhaust manifold or pipe if it is only happening from under the hood.

Lots of oil leaking under the Jeep. Down to no oil right now. Rainbow trail, etc. Want to know worst case scenario...ballpark cost to fix, etc.

Could be a simple fix. Have you found where the oil is leaking from? I had a 93 Grand Cherokee that was leaking oil badly and I found it to be the oil pressure switch that was leaking all that oil. It only cost a few dollars to fix. Check exactly what is leaking first to determine what it will cost.

I have a 1994 jeep grand cherokee limetid whe i acclerate it seems to be slipping what could be the problem

Well...Depending on your engine. 6 cylender engines are reknown to have problems with the transmission. The engine has too much torq and in the long run will make your transmission slip! You'll have to bring it in a garage to have it checked! Might be the transmision fluid also! When it gets old it looses its properties!

What does it mean when, there is unknown accleration caused by the car

Try unplugging the connector on the cruise control. The circuit boards on some models in the module can cross leak. and cause this. Try this first then get back to me. Even if the unit is off this symptom can happen
