How do I turn on the dash board lights, is there a dimmer switch or fuse ?
Turbos do not cause smoke they increase air pressure through the exhaust to the intake.
Is it white smoke or steam? Check your oil level, see if it's too high, and/or you might have some valve stem seals that are not sealing at the point the turbo cuts into inches. Otherwise, make sure it's not overheating, coolant-wise. I wouldn't go after the turbo unless the oil feed line to the turbo, the seals inside the turbo are breaking apart. But you have to remember that the turbo is constantly turning, so if that was the case, you would have smoke right from the get-go.

Hi Kris
Thankyou for your reply, eased my worries a little. I lose no oil, the temp stays the same around the 90 mark. Its white smoke, well its more noticable at night when the car head lights behind me hi-light it more. For example if iam in 5th gear doing 70mph and i put my foot down quite hard i get the smoke. If i press the pedal to acclerate lightly no smoke at all. Its the same with pulling away, hard = smoke, soft = nothing.
Sounds like turbo isn't working. Check your waste gate. See if it's in the closed position. If it is, you're burning raw fuel.
Question: Is your fuel consumption down?
I did a run yesterday of 200miles and i averaged 31mpg. I would say yes the consumption is not what it should be. I also noticed it struggled up hills and i had to drop down a gear or 2. This is the first 4x4 i have owned but now that you mention the turbo is not working, When the turbo 'kicks' in would there not be a surge of power if you can get this with a big 4x4. It feels like nothing happens when i acclerate hard. I have only changed 1 turbo before and that was fairly easy, are these complicated to change?
And again thankyou for your replay
Check the vacuum hoses going to the turbo and underneath the turbo. Make sure they are plugged in because the turbo itself usually does not break down too often unless the bearing is spun. Your waste gate is either electronic or vacuum controlled. It is cheaper to replace the waste gate than the turbo itself.
PS- You should have a surge of power when the turbo kicks in. You should be able to take off like a light.
Also, check with alldata.com, punch in your year of vehicle, get the right engine, and check for any recalls of the turbo or actuator assembly for the waste-gate. Might be covered under a recall. Could be worth checking.
