Cruise control is a vacuum system that holds the accelerator at a steady level if the vacuum is bad it wont work
Is the car equipped with a manual transmission? If so, the clutch release switch may have failed. Does the car shift strangely now - holds onto revs between gear changes? This is another symptom of the same switch failing. When this switch fails the cruise won't engage - part of the built-in idiot police system that would shut off the cruise if you disengaged the clutch.
It's a cheap fix - $30 for the switch. DIY isn't difficult; remove the dash panel below the steering wheel (3 screws - one behind the fuse panel cover and two at the bottom of the panel). Once the screws are removed, work the panel straight back from the dash. The switch is mounted to the right of the steering column and can be identified as the one that is disengaged when the clutch is depressed.
