I have a 1989 F-150 with a hidden electical short. The battry is drained if I leave it connected for 2 days or more and don't drive the truck. I found a similar question here, the response was to disconnect the spark box and see if the battery still went dead. OK, what is a spark box and where would I find it? Never heard of one before! Thanks, JB

HERE IS HOW TO CHECK FOR A BATTERY DRAIN. TURN OFF ALL SWITCHES, MAKE SURE THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT IS CLOSED & THAT THE LITE INSIDE IS GOING OUT .RAISE THE HOOD, DISABLE THE UNDER HOOD LIGHT. CLOSE ALL THE DOORS TIGHT. MAKE SURE ALL COURTESY LIGHTS ARE GOING OUT. GET A 12 VOLT CIRCUIT TESTER, { A SEE THROUGH ICEPICK WITH A LIGHT INSIDE }. REMOVE THE NEG BATTERY CABLE, PUT ONE END OF THE TESTER ON THE NEG BATTERY POST. PUT THE OTHER END OF THE TESTER ON A GOOD GROUND. IF THE TEST LIGHT LIGHTS UP THAT SAYS THERE IS A BATTERY DRAIN. IF THE LIGHT IS ON. START PULLING FUSES ONE AT A TIME FROM THE FUSE/ RELAY BOX NEAR THE BATTERY. WHEN THE LIGHT GOES OUT THAT IS THE DRAINING CIRCUIT. YOU MAY WANT TO DISCONNECT THE ALTERNATOR. ALTERNATORS CAN CHARGE THE BATTERY WHEN THE MOTOR IS RUNNING & IF SOMETHING IS WRONG INSIDE THEY CAN DRAIN THE BATTERY WHEN STOPPED OVERNIGHT.

What would cause a 1998 jetta gt battery to drain as car sits not running at all and it is a brand new battery

accessories or a hidden fault.Try disconnecting the ground on your battery now with a short light tester connect between the post and ground cable if the light comes on then pull one fuse at a time to isolate the connection if this is an accessory and the light goes out leave it out.Take note the door open will turn on the interior light and show power drain so hope that helps it's really a job for two.

What cause battry to die over night?

If test light is a 12 volt light tester AND ILLUMINATES BRIGHT it shows that a component is actively trying to complete a circuit and yes drawing power causing a drain on your battery, now if test light illuminates low, possibility could just be ecm memory or antitheft system active . either way this test should only be done with a 12 volt test light as if you use a 5 volt (computer friendly) tester , false light will have you chasing a ghost. trust me. that trick helps by checking for parasitic draws a 12 volt tester does not illuminate when keep alive memory voltages are present . those voltages are not enough to drain over night. good luck

Hi I bought a new battry and it showed green for a week now it does not show green but car starts must it show green every day

Generally the indicator should glow green for the life of the battery unless it has drained or failed.

If you generally drive extremely short distances (under 15 minutes per trip) you could be draining the battery whenever you drive. This is a common problem in city cars. Otherwise it's possible something is faulty in the charging circuit.

No turning signals

more than likely the turning signal module is shorting out and needs to be replaced or the harness connecting to it is shorting out hence the drain.. To stop the drain remove the indicator fuse and relay from the fuse box under the hood. This will also prevent an electrical fire and get this looked at asap. from a trained professional... I would also recommend you remove the negative battery terminal.

Battery drains in about a day while car is not on, not battry, not alternator, mechanic says both are good. traced drain to fuse panel junction fuse but not sure how that helps

disconnect one fuse every night with a fully charge battery until you have a fully charged battery the next morning or take it to a repair shop
Electrical shorts are tough enough to find if you are not a trained mechcanic

Wont start when its wet out.just replaced the coils and module

Check that the drain holes in the engine bay scuttle are not blocked with dirt or leaves etc, because if they block up and the scuttle area at the rear of the engine fills up with water, it can create a short at the electical connections that maybe there. On BMW the computer is there, and when this scenario happens it shuts the power to the ecu and wont start. Hope that helps

1998 Corvette drains the battery in less than 2 days.

No, corrosion will not cause a battery to drain, even if the corrosion is on the terminals. Several factors can cause battery drain, I would first have the battery tested to see if the battery it self is not bad. If the battery is good, then the most common is a short. All most all new cars have a certain amount of drain,(measured in milivolts) this drain is for clocks and computer memory's, and it would take several days of a vehicle sitting for the battery to be drained. Don't immediately assume you have a problem if you see 2-6 milivolts of drain on a battery with the key out, now if your battery is being drained after being parked over night, you have a problem. The easiest way to pin down the problem short is to disconnect your positive battery cable from the battery, take a 12 volt test light and clamp one end to the positive cable, and hold the probe to the positive post. Now if you have a short the light will come on. Have someone help you by pulling the fuses one at a time. If when a fuse is pulled the light goes out you have isolated the short to that system. If you pulled all the fuses and the light never went out try disconnecting all the wires from the alternator, 9 times outta 10 do this will let you know where your short is. If the system is not critical like power locks some people just leave the fuse out.
