I've had my 2008 TT since March 1. On July 2nd, a beautifully sunny morning, i drove to my office with the top down. When i arrived at my office, the top would not close. The small flaps on the side opened - that was all that occurred. The top was in the open position. I reviewed the owners manual for the manual closing procedures, quickly put the owners manual back in the glove compartment and proceeded to call Service. They asked if the car was on level ground, if i had taken my finger off of the button while it was closing/openning, and if there were any wind gusts. "No" to all of the above. the service department recommeded bringng the car in before a summer shower approached. I had it flat-bedded to the dealer from my office. That afternoon, i received a phone call from teh service department stating that they would need to keep it overnight. I went to the dealer for a loaner the next morning. while i was waiting, i spoke to the Service Tech that worked on my car the day before, all he did was shake his head and said that the broke the manual crank attempting to close the roof.
It was finally fixed after 1.5 days in the service department. I drove home happy on July 3rd.
today, July 11th, i pulled into my driveway after a long day at the office, and the top closed about 6-8 inches. there was an error message on the display panel that said "the soft top cannot be used now". It slowly lowered without my finger on the switch. LUCKILY - i was able to squeeze it in my garage until i can drive it to the service dept. tomorrow.
Any others out there with similar problems?

Release the hydrolics in the trunk. Then pull the top manually into place.
do you know the oem numbers of the sensors, specially the one that is in top front of the passangers.

We had the same problem with our 2008 Audi TT roadster. The convertible was stuck in the up position. The dealer has replace the sensor(s), motor, and other mechanism affected by this problem. This problem has re-occured 4-times within the past one and a half months. It appears that Audi has a problem with TT convertibles and todate has not issued a re-call. She now suspect that it may be a software issue. Have Audi completely resolve your convertible top problem on your vehicle? If so let me known the fix so I can pass it along to the dealer.

try this i got the screw driver out the boot and released the air from the pump then turned the screw back and hey presto it worked simples

Same problem but after a 200 mile run so the battery was not my first thought. I tried your suggestion of releasing the hydraulics as described in the manual by using the screwdriver for a half turn anticlockwise (once I had worked out to use the slotted end rather than the Phillips - the screw is hidden from view). You hear the air escape and just turn the screw back to its original position. The soft top worked fine. And 20 minutes later the heavens opened (Manchester). Mike.

My 2008 TT started doing the same as above. On two occasions the top went down okay but only came up halfway. two
Just got the bad news from Audi Service. It will cost $750.00 to replace both motors and realign the top. Car has only 12,000 miles on it. Hopefully Audi will do a recall at some point and I can get reimbursed.
After thousands and thousands of dollars and 10 trips to three dealers over 7 years for multiple problems with the roof on my 2008 Audi TT , I have found that the absolute cheapest and easiest repair and confidence restorer, is to make your own circuit to raise and lower the roof. Remove both of the flap motor assemblies and the electronic control box from in front of the battery in the trunk and put them on a shelf for good. Splice into the wires near the 10 pin plug that used to plug into the roof control box. The wires are red and black and lead only to the hydraulic roof top pump. Those wires ring almost zero ohms through the pump motor and can be safely tested using a small battery charger with the oil bypass valve open (CCW ). This small capacity power source won't melt wires like the car battery would if you ring a short. Or buy an inline fuse holder with a 20 amp fuse and use that with your car battery as a source. You can hear the whirr if and when you got the right wires. By using a DPDT switch or a polarity reversing plug and receptacle and perhaps 15 amp spring loaded NO pushbutton in a circuit that ends at a cigarette lighter power adapter that you can all store in the glove box between the seats you can have semi -automatic and reliable control. The cigarette lighters are both fed with a 20 amp fuse at the left side fuse box you can only access and see with the driver's door open. Use the splined wrench to latch and unlatch. You can also leave the flap assemblies on the car with the link rods removed and hold them down with small bungee cords when the roof is open. Remember they are only cosmetic. Biggest problem is inserting the spline latch wrench as the spline doesn't always line up with the two female splines of the latch motor and latch. A screwdriver pry will coax the latch hooks to rotate the spline into alignment for easy insertion. Unlike the auto operation, leave the hooks open when using the wrench when opening the roof. Am considering shortening by grinding the splines on the wrench or removing the latch motor. Also, these circuit changes will remove the interlock with the rear window deicer for good, don't really need that so much anyhow. As I have a long experience as an electrical design engineer I cannot believe how complex Audi has made of such a simple thing. Happy Motoring [email protected]
WHAT THE HECK? I have an Audi TT 2008 and this is the 3rd summer it has been in the shop. The Audi dealer "fixed" it a couple of times then replaced the entire mechanism. ($1000). Still had issues last summer. Took it to another mechanic who replaced the alternator and battery. It worked all last summer but now is back in the shop because the top won't close. Flaps open and that's it!! How do we instigate a recall??? Frustrating and expensive!!
I have the exact same problem with my 08 TT convertible top. It has been in for service 4-5 times since I bought it in Dec 2008. It comes out of the shop, works 1 or 2 times and I have the same issue. Mostly will not close. I have an appointment to take it in again tomorrow.

Mine is going in for service tomorrow for the same reasons. It doesn't close, service zapped the codes (3 different times) and this last time, it opened about a foot. I'll keep you posted. They need a recall. I've only had the car since April and I'm ready to sell it.

I have the same problem - 2008 Audi TT - softtop started to come up and just stopped. The manual wasn't very clear but you can manually close it. Taking it into the shop tomorrow - fun fun.
Same issues. Flap sensors and flaps replaced by prior owner. I had code reset and has worked since. Cheaper to buy a VAG for laptop and clear any codes you need to,

OMG! I have had the same problem-car is in the shop right now for the third time! When is Audi going to recognize this problem and recall or do something about it?? Crazy!

I've had the same problem with my 2008 Audi TT roadster. The convertible was stuck in the up position. Several times after leaving the car sit overnight with the top stuck it would go back up the next morning. I've also had the top stop when it was going down, but if I waited a few seconds and kept pushing the button the top would either continue going down or it would allow me to put in back up. However, for the most part once it's stuck the top will not move at all and displays a message on the instrument panel. The dealer has replaced the sensor(s), motor, and other parts affected by this problem. This problem has re-occurred numerous times within the past 3 months one which happens to be this morning.
I have had this same problem. The top will retract properly, but will not return to the closed position. The sensor has been replaced once, and the problem is still occurring. I wish I had a solution to offer, if anyone knows, it will be appreciated!
I have the same problem. Bought the car in July, no problems for the first couple of months then top stuck down. Used the manual closing procedure in the manual and the crank used to engage locking hooks sheared. Put the top down manually, waited overnight and the top operated correctly. Took it to the dealer and was told the part needed to fix the car was on "national" backorder. The top worked OK for a couple of weeks but then stuck down again. Manually raised it, luckily once the top was near closed, used the electrical switch to open locking hooks (same position as putting the top down) then reversed button and top locked closed. Going to bring back to dealer, not a lot of hope based on previous comments though.
The top has stopped working for the second time. Same problem as everyone else in this post.
My 2008 Roadster has the same problem. The first time it was the left side motor to the top... 3 days to fix, the 2nd! time (a week later) the right side went out.
Shortly after having them both replaced my car wouldn't just not turn over...it was dead. Completely dead. 3 weeks later.... "something" is draining the battery.... pick up the car. Radio not working.
Oh.. and this is my 2nd one in 12 months. The first one had different issues.
the same thing has happened to me...top once stuck down, flap motor was replaced, and then a few months later the top is stuck partially up. flap motor replaced again. the person at the dealer told me Audi is experiencing a lot of problems with the flap motor, and a better one will eventually be introduced through a recall....no word on date when that will happen.
I have a TT purchased in August 2007. After 12 months of life, with frequent use of the soft top I encountered the problem reported here; upon a short journey with the top open it remained in the open position. The initial phase of the closing sequence would work with the flaps opening......but that was as far as it got. I took it straight to AUDI service and left it with them as they informed me it would take an hour to close it manually.......and it was near closing time. I've used it for 4 months since the repair, and have recently been informed by the annoying warning light and audible signal @50 km/h that the top "is not fully closed" IT IS!. I informed AUDI Service and they told me it is a microswitch. I'm still waiting for the component to be replaced after 2 weeks. Until Audi does a recall/update I don't think the fun will end here....
 2008 audi tt convertible purchased less than 8 mos ago.  in under 10,000 mi top has failed to open or close 4X. audi has replaced motors, and eventually the entire mechanism. problem recurred. currently being repaired and i'm researching lemon law in calif.
I purchased an 2008 Audi tt roadster 2.0 back in december. It has 1223 miles on it. On March 22, I experience the same issue. The flap motor went out as well and the top was stuck about the same distance.
After reading your post before picking my car up today. I asked about the motor, and they indicated that this is a newer model motor replacement. I will be running the top every day just to check, but I worry now everytime that I put it up and down.
Same prob.....I own a 2008 Audi TT 2.0 Roaster.....happened to me twice, top operation is faulty. The first time i experienced the problem the audi service center said a branch got stuck inside the mechanism. The second time which I am currently experiencing now, the audi service center said they ordered two motors for the two flaps and when they installed it they tried closing the top but to no avail. They ran a computer diagnostic with the car but nothing was showing up everything appeared to be working properly. Obviously that wasn't the case. After 3 days of my car being at the service center, they said now they need to order a module for the soft top operation. Hopefully when it comes it will solve the problem but Audi should really recall whatever is causing the problem and btw for some reason my car didn't come with the crank to manually close the top ,anyone's not come with a crank too??
Both my wife and I bought convertible TT's in 2008. She bought hers, and I liked it so much I bought one. She had hers for about 3 months before I bought mine. She had no top issues, but about 2 weeks after I got mine it got stuck on the way up. I called the dealer and they told me they replaced a switch. I had no additional issues for about 9 months. My wife just had hers fail for the first time about two weeks ago. We took it in and they replaced a flap motor. She had it for two days and it failed again. Well, she just got it back this week and I took mine out today and it failed again on the way up. Overall I love the car, but I am really thinking Audi has an issue here and should do a recall. I never had an Audi before and based on this, I may never buy one again. VeryÂ

We own a 2009 audi tt and have the same problem. 1st time they said that the flap motor was bad, 2nd time that the latch mechanism is bad. Does not appear that they have fixed the problem yet.
I have a 2008 Audi TT 2.0 Roadster. In March I was trying to put the top up and it stopped about 1/3 of the way up. I was actually dialing my dealer's number when it finally went up all the way. I did not put the top down again until I could get it to the dealer. They replaced two motors (flap motors?). I haven't had the top down much since (poor weather in the Chicago area).
Same problem, i purchased my TT brand new on the 23rd of April 09 and within a week the top would not close. It went down fine but once at the open stage the flaps opened and the entire mechanism seized.Â
Took it in to the dealer today and they stated that the flap motors needed to be replaced. Im in Australia so depending on the shipment time could be up to 4 weeks wait till its back to normal.
My cousin had the same problem with his new TT however it has been running fine (8 months and counting) after replacing the flap motors.Â
Fingers crossed they fix this nagging problem, other than this its been a beautiful car to drive.
I have a 2008 TT convertible, leased in March 2008. I am in South Florida so the top is up and down constantly. The same problem has happened FOUR times to me. This week the dealer did tell me they installed the "new" motor that will "hopefully fix things." Either way, I am invoking the Florida Lemon Law, and time to look at repossessed BMWs! 2007 TT Roadster, UK Spec. Same problem - soft top jammed halfway up. I also sheared the thread on the crank trying to get the manual locking mechanism to work. Took it to the dealer twice before getting fixed. They say it's the microswitches which cause the problem. There is a safety mechanism which prevents the roof from moving if the status of the roof locks (open/closed) cannot be determined, and replacing the microswitches fixes this apparently. Have had the car back for a day and opened and closed the roof maybe 30 times without incident. Clearly a general problem.
I have exactly the same problem with my 2008 TT roadster. Phoned the garage today to get it "repaired" again - this will be the 3rd time! Audi are telling me that it's never happened with any other TT - then I found this website!!

I have the same problem as everyone else is describing except the first thing that happended was a warning alert regarding an adaptive light defect. I went to the dealership and they had to order a headlight part to fix whatever caused that alert. While waiting for that part, the very next day, after a short trip with the roof down, the roof would not go back up. The windows moved and the flaps opened but the roof would not budge. Took it back to the dealer which says audi has experienced this problem alot and the part(s) needed is on back order. They manually put the roof up so I can at least drive it after tomorrow when they install the headlight part to fix the adaptive light defect until the roof motor parts show up. Have had the 2008 since March of 2008 without incident... loved the car til now.

I have the same problem with my TT. Well I found in europe webside each lateral flap have a sensor that show de position of the flap, when the controller doesnt recognize the sensor it stop the roof. Well I found that just moving a little the flap back and forward the sensor start working proppelly. This sensor is like a potentiometer and is not making inside it a good contact. For me is a manufacturing problem because this was happening from the begining
I've had my electric roof repaired under warranty. Just reading how to close the roof manually. Doesn't mention reclosing the pressure relief in the boot or how the system re pressurises. Does anyone have experience on this.
My roof stopped closing about 4 years ago so each time I use it (maybe 4 times a year) i manually close it but always tighten the pressure release screw in the boot after I close it as I presume it will stop going down on it's own, i am also presuming it's a low fluid issue in my case but awkward to get to so just haven't bothered and not paying Audi in the region of £600 plus.
My audi tech said the best way to repair this issue is To buy a 2009.
