Cylinder head bolt tightening sequence - 1993-97
Remove the head from the engine. If prying is necessary, use a protected blade; take great care not to damage the mating surfaces of the head and block.
Clean the head and block of all gasket material. Take great care not to gouge or scratch the mating surfaces.
To install:
Place a new gasket on the cylinder block. Make sure it is positioned correctly. Install the cylinder head in position.
Lightly coat the head bolt threads and plate washers with engine oil. Install the bolts in the head.
Uniformly tighten the head bolts in several passes in sequence, to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
Mark the front of each bolt with a dot of paint. Following the correct order, tighten each bolt an additional 90 degrees. When complete, all the paint marks should face to the side of the engine.
Again following the correct order, tighten the bolts another 90 degrees of rotation. When complete, the paint marks should face the rear of the engine, exactly 180 degrees away from the original starting point. Correct bolt torque is expressed as 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm) + 90° + 90°.
