had a similiar problem ,if its getting hot that it wont start ,sounds maybe like an overheating problem,check the thermastat to see if its opening an air pockets in youre cooling system..would need more info other wise.
The 2.5 and the 3.5 transmissions are the same except for the side cover where the output gears are. The 3.5 uses thicker gears. They were made in Decherd Tn. Also the bell housing is different. The starter for the 3.5 is mounted in the bell housing and the starter for the 2.5 is mounted to the block.
