My 2001 Montero Sport (NOT 4WD) will not start. I suspect the fuel pump has gone bad. How can I be sure? The engine turns over and the spark plugs ARE firing. I also suspect it may be an electrical issue since my wife mentioned an electrical burning smell when she tried to start the vehicle.

You can get a spray can of carb cleaner and spray a little in the intake. If it starts, then your problem is definitely fuel - related. It could be a number of things if it is fuel related, but the fuel pump is the most common cause. The only way to know for sure is to check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail then check to make sure the computer is firing the injectors. You should be able to hear the fuel pump run for a couple of seconds if you listen at the fuel tank while someone turns the ignition to the "Run" position. However, the fuel pump could be running and not putting out enough pressure to start the engine. If you can't hear it at all, then most likely, that is what your problem is. The second most likely cause if you can't hear the fuel pump is the security system may have the fuel disabled for one reason or another.

I have mitsubishi montero 2001,the problem is that its started shacking I mean the whole engine.

This usually means that there is a misfire that could be many things. Try replacing the spark plugs first. Then if the motor mounts are weak or worn out the shaking will be more noticeable. Recommend you replace the worn motor mounts.

I have a 2001 montero sport. The 4wd light flashes when its in 2wd. anyone know what this could mean? Also does anyone kow if th fuel pump is located inside the gas tank on this vehicle or is external?

If you have lights flashing that usually means there is a problem with the vehicle. The 4wd light, I would guess is transmission or transfer case problem. There should be a code in the computer to tell you what is going on, it's going to take a good scanner to get the transmission or transfer case codes though. Most cheap scanners will only pull out the engine codes. I don't know about the fuel pump but, I would be willing to bet it's in the tank.

Shuddering going uphill 2001 mitsubishi montero sport

Most likely you have a misfire, I'd be surprised if it didnt turn on the check engine light. It may be a coil or sparkplg problem.
Do this this. With your foot on the brake hard and the ebrake on put the car in gear and rev the car up a bit. What your doing is putting a load on the engine to see if it shutters. If it does it points to a coil issue usually or it just may be time plugs and wires
