What causes a low rpm at the initial start of the engine resulting into our car vibrating or shaking a bit? Please help. Thanks. We have asked some mechanic and they said it may have to do with the fuel filter or the fuel pump. Is it safe to use replacement parts for a three year old car with very low mileage around 13,000km. thank you

You may want to check for buildup at butterfly valve on throttle body. could be buildup of carbon that when cold is hard, and after engine warms up the buildup would soften. this would allow butterfly to sink into it.

always start with the cheap stuff!

The idle speed should be controlled by a closed loop system. The required idle speed is programmed into the ECU and the ECU should measure the actual idle speed, make a comparison and carry out adjustments to ignition timing, fuelling and air flow to maintain the two figures within a fairly close tolerance.

If the engine runs well on the road fuel supply won't be the cause of a poor and rough idle. The big question is the idle rough because of a fault and the fault is causing the slow idle or is the idle so slow it is the only reason the engine seems rough.

The possible faults/reasons for the slow idle are many but in most cases such faults would switch on the engine check light.

I suggest the engine is serviced if it is due - certainly the basics should be checked, spark plugs, sparks, air leaks, breather system, cleanliness of the throttle body and/or idle air valve, etc.

If the routine stuff doesn't cure the problem it would be advisable to hand it over to a specialist who can examine live data on a good scanner...

Have a 2nd opinion. It can be due to the cooling system low or the sensor, idle speed sensor or solenoid. A fuel filter or pump would give u trouble hot or cold temps. Get 2nd op. good luck. PS its safe to use reputable replacement parts.

Not sure if this will help you out.Troubleshooting starting and running problems can sometimes be quite difficult. This is especially true if you aren't aware if all the possible causes of a problem. This is a general guide which will list symptoms for 944 starting and running problems and common causes of those problems. It is intended to help you map out a troubleshooting plan.
Running Problems

  1. Rough Idle
    1. If the car starts when cold but, idles rough or does not want to stay running, this can indicate a problem with the engine temperature sensor. When the engine is started cold, the engine temperature sensor sends a signal to the DME control unit to provide a richer mixture. As the engine temperature sensor starts to fail, it sends a higher than actual temperature signal to the DME control unit. The DME control unit leans the fuel mixture thinking the engine is at normal operating temperature. This causes the engine to run rough. As the engine warms, it not longer needs the richer cold idle mixture and the engine runs smoother.
    2. If the car idles rough this can also be indicative of bad plug wires, distributor, or rotor. One way to check for bad plug wires is to inspect the plug wire runs with the car running in a very dark area. If the plug wires are bad you should see some arching to the cylinder head or fuel rail.
    3. If the car idles rough or cuts off at low RPM or idle, the cause could be a failing O2 sensor. The O2 sensor is out of the loop at full throttle and will not affect the way the car runs.
    4. A rough idle can also be caused by a problem with the air flow box. The damper for the air flow box can fail mechanically or the contacts inside the box can get dirty and send a errant signal to the DME control unit. This can sometimes be corrected by cleaning the electrical contacts inside the air box. This requires removing the cover on the air box which is held in place by caulk. You will need to cut through the caulk and gently pry the cover off. Once the cover is removed, clean the circuit board inside with a good contact cleaner. When you have finished cleaning the circuit board, reattach the cover using a non-corrosive caulk.
    5. If the car experiences a rough idle or idle fluctuates several hundred RPM, this can indicate a sticking idle stabilizer valve. Many people have removed and cleaned them but, this is normally a temporary fix and the valve should be replaced. A faulty O2 sensor can also cause RPM to fluctuate at idle. Unplug the O2 sensor and see if the idle still fluctuates.
  2. Difficult Starting
    1. If the car is difficult to crank after sitting for more than several hours, the fuel return regulator or fuel pump check valve could be faulty. This will allow the fuel rail to depressurize and it takes some time for the fuel pump to increase fuel rail pressure sufficiently to fire the car.
    2. If the car is difficult to start when warm, again the fuel pump check valve, fuel return regulator, or individual fuel injectors could be leaking. The fuel pump check valve or the fuel return regulator leaking allows the fuel to drain back to the gas tank depressurizing the fuel rail. When the car is warm, the fuel remaining in the fuel rail can flash causing vapor lock. There are several ways to check this. One is to connect a fuel pressure gauge at the fuel rail. Start the car, let it run until fuel pressure is stable, then shut down the car and monitor the pressure at the fuel rail. With the car not running, the pressure at the fuel rail should not decrease to less than 15 psig. If it starts to decrease, clamp the rubber part of the line from the fuel return regulator to the gas tank and see if it stops the pressure decrease. If not, clamp the line at the discharge of the fuel pump and see if it stops the pressure decrease. An individual fuel injector leaking can depressurize the fuel rail and cause the same problem.
    3. If the car starts easily when cold, but is difficult to start when warm a failing DME relay could be causing the problem. As the DME relay starts to fail, it operates at a higher temperature. If the car is stopped, the higher temperature of the relay creates a high enough resistance to keep the relay from picking up when the car is started again. When the relay cools and the resistance decreases, the relay will again function normally.
    4. If the car is very hard to start or only fires part of the time and then dies it could be a problem with the distributor cap or rotor. 944 rotors are notorious for having the set screw back out of the rotor allowing it to spin on the end of the camshaft. When this happens the car will not fire at all or will fire momentarily when the rotor is in line with the correct cylinder to be fired.
    5. If the car is difficult to start when cold it could be a problem with the engine speed or reference sensors. One of the sensors sends a signal to the DME for TDC and the other an engine speed signal. The DME uses these signals to time the pulses to the ignition coil and the firing of the fuel injectors. If the sensors do not send the proper signal to the DME the normal result is a failure to get proper spark from the ignition coil. Sometimes their failure may be a result of debris building up on the ends of the sensors which reduces the gap between the sensor and the flywheel. If so, cleaning the ends of the sensor may get them working again.
    6. If the car is difficult to start or will not start at all regardless of operating temperature, there are a number of problems which could be causing this. Here is a list of possible causes:
      • DME Control Unit
      • DME Relay
      • Security System Control Unit
      • Fuel Pump
      • Fuel Pump Fuse
      • Distributor Cap, Rotor, Coil, or Primary Coil Wire
      • Engine Speed and/or Reference Sensors
A fuel pressure gauge, spark tester, and voltmeter are extremely useful in narrowing down the possible causes of the problem.

SOURCE: How do I replace a fuel pump on a 2003 escape?

Check to see if the inertia switch is tripped first. Read your owner manual for location and how to reset. Just push the button. It usually only trips in an accident to shut off the fule pump in case there is a leak.

here is how to replace the pump. It's good because you don't have to drop the tank!

  1. Relieve the fuel pressure. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00 . (I disconnect inertia switch and crank engine for 10 seconds to revilve pressure).
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. (I don't do this myself). For additional information, refer to Section 414-01 .
  1. Lift the LH rear seat cushion.
  1. Position the carpet aside.
  1. Remove the screws and the fuel pump module access cover.
  1. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  1. Disconnect the fuel and vapor lines from the fuel tank. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00 .
  1. s3k~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif WARNING: The fuel tank may be pressurized. Remove the fuel tank filler cap slowly. If a hissing sound is heard, wait until the condition stops before removing the fuel tank filler cap. If these precautions are not followed, fuel may spray and cause personal injury.
    Remove the gas cap.
  1. Using the special tool, remove the fuel pump module. (If you don't have tool, use a chisel or screwdriver and tap counterclockwise to rotate the ring).

  1. NOTE: Install a new fuel pump mounting gasket.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
    • Start the engine and visually inspect for leaks.

Not a bad job. buy pump on ebay or new at discount at tascafordparts.com

SOURCE: 2004 f350 6.0 diesel.Engine surges

Hi, i want you to clean the air intake valve and idle speed control valve, follow the procedure below.

Here are the common cause of surges, cold stalls, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

2005 chrysler town and country when i start the van it shaking vibration hard in park and in reverse it and in neutral and in drive it perfect.it drives good on highways no shaking

try to increase the idle-rpm..
Example - at standstil condition when you start your van, have look at rpm... say 1000 or 1200 or 1500.. whatever it may be..
Keep idle-rpm a little bit higher, if previously it was 1200rpm then set it to 1500 rpm..
If the problem is solved then..
1) clean ur airfilter
2) check spark plug condition
good or bad... if bad then replace..
3) check fuel supply line, if it is damaged or folded

Why is my car is vibrating when i started the engine?

Hi.

Check that there is spark on all cylinder from start. A cylinder not firing when you start the engine will result in vibration. Regarding this check sparks, cables, distribution, injector pulses, camshaft position sensor and timing and other factors that may cause misfire. Do an ODBII code scanning.

Check lower engine mount. Check crankshaft position sensor. A defective sensor may result in vibration.

Regards.

98 lincoln navigator loud noise, shaking, high rpm at idle, drive

I don't know how much oil you had to put in but it sounds like you have maybe more than opne issue and both sound major. One is engine reving and speed not picking up sounds like trans problem. Two the engine shaking and making noise and being run low on oil leans toward possible engine damage. If your mechanicly inclined check all fluids and when checking trans fluid smell it. If it smells burnt the trans has been damaged. Check oil pressure and make sure coolant is full. You may have to take it into the shop.

Hi, I have a 2006 Altima with 31,500 miles. Recently, the engine start shaking when car is Idle but I still feel the shake when driving or at red lights. My second problem is a weird loud (humming) noise...

You don't need to change the spark plugs since it has only 31.5 K. The plugs should last 60K. There is a an adjustment at the gas cable end at engine to increase the idle a little bit. You can increase rpm at idle to 600 RPM. Since your RPM at idle is low that why it is shaking at idle, red lights. Let me know it it is shaking at high speed ( 2500 RPM)

98 mazda 626..starts then shakes and then shuts off

A few things could be causing this problem:
  1. Vibration when running is an indication that one or more spark plugs are fouled or missing
  2. Cracked/worn distributor cap
  3. On all models except the Millenia, the fuel filter is attached to a bracket located in the left rear of the engine compartment, next to or beneath the brake master cylinder fluid reservoir
I hope this answered your question. Best of luck.
