This
means the linkage in the rear hatch to the handle has failed. The only way then
to open it is to remove the trim with the door closed and gain access to the
mechanism to manually open the hatch and repair or replace what is broken. You
would need to climb in the back of your H2 through the other doors, and remove
the inner trim on the back door.---------- Read
this procedure to disassemble the read door parts:--- Remove
the lift gate pulls trap. Remove the bolt that retains the cargo tie down. Remove
the 2 push pin fasteners at the bottom edge of the lift gate trim panel. Gently
pull on the lift gate trim panel to disengage the retaining clips. Remove the
lift gate trim panel from the vehicle. Inspect for broken or missing
retaining clips and replace the clips as necessary. Disconnect the lock
actuator electrical connector. Remove
the fastener (1) retaining the control arm to the actuator. Remove the fastener
(2) retaining the actuator to control arm assembly plate, Slide the actuator
upward, and remove the actuator from the plate. But
if internal parts look intact then it can be repaired. But if internal parts
look misaligned and cracked then whole assembly needs to be replaced.----------
this should help.Thanks.Helpmech.
Important: Note location of arm
prior to removal.

Yes - thanks a million for the info. I was successfully able to remove the inner door cover, where I found three broken mounts under the latch/plate cover assembly. Since the latch was still functional, I was able to repair the plastic (ugh!) mounts by drilling through the plastic cover and using stainless nuts, bolts & washers. The bolt heads are visible from the rear but don't look bad at all, and the unit is stronger than new. Thanks again - you probably helped save me upwards of $700-800 dollars at a dealership.
