Start with a timing check, at higher miles the timing chain plastic guides wear and cause multiple misfire and driveability concerns...of course check the obvious, spark plugs, plug wires,c.o.p,fuel pressure..all basics. .ck engine light on?
Carol Ann, Your catalytic converter is plugged up [restricted] This is causing the exhaust to get red hot and causing the reduction in power. You need to replace this part [$$$} The catalytic converter failed because you have been driving the car for months with the fuel mixture excessively rich. You need to find and fix the cause of the rich mixture or your replacement catalytic converter will also fail in a few more months.
It almost sounds like an electronic problem (i.e. ECU). I don't think it would be a fuse because you wouldn't have anything at all. Sometimes when the instrument cluster starts to act up, you'll get a lot of problems with the engine running. In this situation, I would get the car checked out from a Ford dealer before things get worse.
