It sounds like a fuel pump and/or fuel filter. Couple of reasons - if fuel filter is partially clogged fuel pump works twice as hard. Also this time of year with big temperature swings condensation (water) forms in fuel tank. If its a weak fuel pump, as pump gets old/tired it won't hold adequate pressure and drains back at night or shut down. Try the fuel filter first and run a good fuel cleaner through it prior to changing filter.

In the morning or when my 1987 vw golf sits for a while (when the car is cold) it will start right up but then dies. i have to rev it and keep the rpm's up for a couple of minutes and as it get's warm it...

There are devices in the Bosch CIS-E system not functioning that may need replaced. Most commonly it would be the thermo-time switch. This switch is also a sensor telling the ECU whether your engine is cold or hot so it would compensate fuel delivery depending on temperature. An auxiliary air regulator also opens (more air) or closes (less air) dependent from the thermo-time switch signals. It's basically telling the ECU when it's a cold morning to supply a richer air/fuel mixture or not to when it's at operating temperature. There is also a cold start valve (fifth fuel injector) that could be sticking or leaking or simply not supplying fuel during cold start up. Again, this has a higher level of understanding and special VW tools to diagnose your fuel injection problem that should be left to a VW tech to work on. It could be dangerous because fuel is involved, a single spark from static electricity could ruin your day.

Dose the coils on the passat differ from the coils on the golfs. What are the specifications on the coils of the passat 1.8 T 2002 MODEL

the passat uses coil packs one for each cylinder and the 2002 golf uses one coil pack that fires all cylinder and also not the same engine in 2002. now the 2000 vw golf with the 1.8 engine uses the same coils,so if its a 2000 vw golf with a 1.8 engine then yes you can use them they are exactly the same, hope this helps.

Mk1 vw golf cabrio: hot starting problem?

Probably the starter needs to be replaced. If it was the battery, you would have more problems cold than hot.

'96 VW Golf GL with 2.0 motor. Cold start knock

It sounds like the hydraulic lifters are bleeding down after sitting for a while... there are ball checks which are supposed to prevent this... Try using a good engine flush (a product that frees sticky lifters) and replace the oil with a good synthetic... Hope this helps...;-)

I have a 2000 VW Golf 2.0L petrol. Occasionally when you start the car it turns itself off. Once it is started again it shakes as if fuel is not getting through, have to accellerate to prevent car from...

This is a common occurance on vw's, you need to check for vacuum hose leaks, this is the cause.
Volkswagen engines rely heavily on vacuum and if there is one cut hose, or one small leak, your car will run like this.
If you can keep it running with the hood up, start listening for vacuum leaks around your hoses on both sides.
Most vacuum leaks occur near the front of the engine bay.
