It sounds like insufficient fuel pressure.

  • Arnold Goldman Oct 26, 2013

It is quite likely to be low fuel pressure caused by blocked fuel filter or even a blockage in the fuel pump.. The XJ6 Series 3 does not have a fuel filter on the inlet side of the pump. Advisable to fit one. If the pump is blocked, a General Motors fuel pump is available that will replace the Jaguar pump.

SOURCE: jaguar xj6 not starting

Yes you can check the Crank & Cam Sensors they can control spark and fuel. You can test them by finding out the normal resistance and then testing yours for their resistance. Do you have a way to scan the car? Did it quit while driving?

SOURCE: 1984 Jaguar xj6 runs rough on cold start and fuel

Hello Drankin ;
The causes of this particular problem can be that of many . Is this car a daily driver or a garage queen ? I would attack this problem by ruling out the items with the lowest cost first . Please note that the info below are some of the steps I would take at tackling this problem .

a) Check that your oil filler cap is on tight and that the seal is good .
b) Check the electrical connections to be certain nothing is loose .or disconnected .
c)If the car has been sitting, run it for a while and try to empty the tank of that old gas . I would refiill it with new gas and fuel injector cleaner .
d) I would change the fuel fiter with a new one .You must do this with the engine depressurized and off with both filler caps open .
e) You could also check for air leaks at the intake manifold .
f) How is your exhaust ? Is it leaking ?Is it blocked at the ends ?
g) Check the the Butterflies on the Air-Flow-meter . Make sure that they open and close easily . There are spray on cleanes for this . Do not hone the openings .
h)Relace the charcoal cannister .
i) I would do a compressionon all 6 cylinders
j)Check the fuel pump for proper pressure or replace it .
k) At the emission's station check to see what is the idle mixure and you may need to have the idle mixure adjusted on the airlow meter .
L) Check/ Rule - Out the Auxillary air valve .
m) Check/ Rule - Out the Fuel Injectors .
n) Check/ Rule -Out the Coolant temperature Sensor
o) Check/ Rule - Out the Air Temperature Sensor
p) Check/ Rule - Out the Thermotime Switch

I hope that this has been helpful to you .

I have a jaguar xj6 3.2 liter engine that hasnt been used for like 3 - 4 years. I just recently changed the battery and would not start it cranks but does not want to start. What do you think is wrong...

The fuel has definately gone bad. The new fuels they are refining do not stay as long as the old gasoline. You will need to drain the tank and refill with fresh fuel. Once you do that, remove the sparkplugs, remove the coil wire ( to prevent a fire ) and crank the engine for about 10 seconds. Replace the spark plugs and it should fire right off after that. Let me know if you need anything else.

Fuel pump is bad or plugged fuel filter it seems. Crack the line from the filter leading towards the engine first. If gas starts squirting out fast, you have good pressue. If not the filter is plugged or a bad pump. How old is the fuel filter by chance? If original its plugged up by now
