VW group have TWO service regimes,annually/10k or extended ( when the service indicator shows when you need to service it).this is set when the dealer supplies the car NEW.it cannot be reset after.VW group products fit 5/30 fully synthetic when new and the type of oil for services is determined by the service type,I.E. annual/10k services, use 10/40 semi synthetic and for extended/20k services use 10/40 fully synthetic.check the oil every 500 miles as ALL VW will use oil.if you bought the car used, then, rather than use the service indicator, do an oil change EVERY year and use semi 10/40.if a dealer services the car the service indicator should be reset EVERY time.

They make a high mileage motor oil. Also you need to consider whether or not it is using oil. IF you have not used synthetic and it is not using oil, you can continue using what you are using.

Standard oil was put in the car when I bought it whereas it had always had BMW approved synthetic. Will this oil switch damage the engine/other

Yes, it could damaged your engine, drain and replace filter with what kind was on before, always use synthetic oil,I take my Toyota tundra to dealer to get oil change, and they scan the whole system for free and give me a print out of the results,if something is wrong, they will tell me and how much or I can fix my self. That's the best place to get oil change, hidden benefits. They told me once my license plate bulb was burnt out, they replaced for a dollar.

Can standard oil instead of BMW approved synthetic damage engine

It's highly doubtful that non-synthetic would damage your engine.
Synthetic decreases wear and modestly increases mpg. Other than that it's not much else.

What Is The Best Motor Oil For A 1996 Nissan Quest

AMSOIL 5W-30 Signature Series 100% synthetic motor oil or Mobil 1 5W-30 Extended mileage are probably the best 2 synthetics. Depending on the mileage, you might be better off with using a standard 5W-30 non-synthetic oil and just change it regularly.

What is the best oil to use for a 1997 chrysler sebring 6 cyclinder

the best oil to use depends on whether your engine is using oil or not,if its not, then 5/40 fully synthetic.(expensive) if it is then 10/40 semi synthetic.(reasonable)when using a pint to 500 miles then use 20/50(cheap).

What synthetic oil is the best one to get for my 1999 lexus gs 300

AMSOIL or Mobil 1 synthetic oils. Either one. AMSOIL claims to be the best but...in order to meet the standards "all" manufacturers of synthetic oils have to have the minimum oil content mixture to achieve the quality standards.

SJ or SL or ILSAC 5W-30 is the manufacturers recommended engine oil.

OIl, synthetic or regular, what's the difference?

Synthetic oil won't break down as quickly as conventional oil, gives better protection and longer life. Excellent product, I Strongly suggested for those out there who forget to do their oil changes regularly or courier/ work vehicles.
Heres the link to an explaination from Castrol

I use conventional Oil in my jimmy with 5% of Lucas engine oil treatment and service the engine every 3,000 miles. I find it to costly for the Synthetic oil every 3,000 miles, and as for the high mileage oil you can buy. The high mileage oil has a higher fluid retention like adding Lucas engine oil treatment to any conventional oil, so you decide on what type of oil you like to use in your engine.
Good luck and hope this helps.

1992 Camry 4, What oil should I use?

They say you can, but remember, not a good idea to switch back if you change your mind later. Personally I'd go with 5w30 for winter then maybe 10w30 or 10w40 for summer. All kinds of arguments for and against synthetic, vs standard. personally I prefer standard & change at proper intervals.
