Hi

If you are not familiar with the timing I would not recommend you doing the work yourself, this is a major job to a novice. The timing keeps the engine in sync so that nothing contacts each other, the pistons and the valves, cam etc all have to do there job at a set time within a split second, a mistake on timing can result in complete enegine failure and meaning in most cases new cylinder head, new belts, tensioners, pullys, water pump, gasket etc etc etc.

I would get it into a garge as it is a staright forward task for them although does take a few hours and is often quite costly because of this. average price for a regular car is £225 for an Audi it could be more like £400 thats assuming you are in the UK.

Regards
Dan

How much to fix a coolant and oil leak on a 2000 audi a6?

Normally they fix these, during Timing belt Replacement. For an Audi A6 3.0, the replacement interval guide is every 80000miles or 8 years. Repair time, remove and install is 5hours.
The cost of replacing a belt as part of a routine service could be as little as 5 to 10% of the repair cost following a belt failure.
So if you decide to keep your car, keep in mind to spend at least $1000 for maintenance. Mine was a 2000 Audi A6 T2.7. With two, turbochargers under both sides of the engine. I sold it with 80000miles, without changing the belt. Hope this may help.

1996 Audi A6 It's hard to start

Sounds like the timing is getting out of sync. Check the belt for worn teeth or loose ness.

Audi timing belt

It's a complicated job, and usually takes about 8 hours to do the full service if you're familiar with the car's mechanicals, you have a good array of tools (air tools help a lot), you're familiar with what you're doing, and with how to disassemble everything (including removing the front of the car - I'm not joking). There's more to the job than just the belt too - you need to replace the timing belt, timing tensioner, water pump, thermostat, serpentine belt, and serpentine tensioner. If your cam seals are leaking (which is also known to happen), you'd need those and plan for a couple more hours as well, due to the care that must be taken not to scratch or score the cam end caps.
