What part was installed? The white smoke is antifreeze burning or oil burning. When you are behind the vehicle does it smell like oil burning or antifreeze? If a head gasket goes bad to determine this the compression will make bubbles in the radiator with the cap off and engine running! I'd need more info on the part installed and that will tell me where to look next! thanks

Hello,

The Dorman valve cover kit has absolutely nothing to do with your start-up smoke issue.

Two things: Coolant does not cause white smoke, but will cause white steam, and you'll be able to smell the sickly sweet coolant smell at your exhaust.
White smoke is caused by burning oil and will smell like burning oil or rubber at the exhaust.

For this engine and mileage, white smoke on cold start-up is completely normal. First, you'll always have some oil leak past the valve seals, especially on higher mileage engines.
Second, the catalytic converter is not yet to operating temperature so it can't burn the oil. Once the cat is to temp, you'll not see engine emissions unless they are more than the converter can handle.

That said, why exactly did you have the valve cover gaskets replaced?

Valve seal leaks will cause an engine to smoke on start until the oil burns off. If a head gasket were leaking it would be smoking constantly.

Ya sounds like a blown head gasket. Look for coolant in the oil. If it looks like chocolate milk there is your problem.

Why would oil be in my coolant?

Oil in coolant, white smoke at start up = blown head gasket or cracked cylinder.

White smoke is water vapor from coolant. Only at startup indicates a small (extremely small) leak -- it will get bigger. Only at startup is because as engine cools it sucks water into cylinder. A compression check will tell you which cylinder is the problem (could be multiple)

Leaking anti freeze from the caddalic converter

Water/Antifreeze in the exhaust, and usually a cloud of white smoke, is indicative of a blown head gasket or cracked. This usually happens when the vehicle overheats due to a bad thermostat; the head gasket usually blows first and can sometimes crack the head.
Blown head gasket - 350 to 400 to repair; cracked head, add 200 to 300 dollars.

We had the same problem but when we put in a new fuse it smoked. It turned out to be something with the master cylinder and required the changing of a 20 dollar part by the mechanic and problem solved

White smoke?

It's just condensation. Water will also drip from the pipe.

The colder it is, the worse the 'smoke' will be. I was in Vernal, Utah earlier this week, drove through -18*F weather, my truck never quit blowing white smoke.

And NO IT IS NOT YOUR HEADGASKET
