That sensor you took out is an input to the power liftgate module
What color wire's go to it ? There is five different switches , sensors for the liftgate . The sensor you took out ,the liftgate module isn't see a return signal . So it sends a message on the data network to the BCM which tell's the insturment cluster to light the light .

Try removing the fuse for the security system and see if this will allow you to start the car. If not, you have another problem and will need to take it to a mechanic.

SOURCE: 2001 cadi deville wont start
I'm sure you've checked, but will the headlights come on? Radio? Any sign of power? Did you check the battery voltage under the hood? Our 2001 was dead. No signs of life at all. I checked the voltage and was approx 3.5V on new battery. I pulled the back seat and measure straigt off the battery. 11.89V. Believe it or not, had loose connection for no rhyme or reason. Tighted battery connections and we're back on the road. Just a thought.......
SOURCE: when battery is connected fuel door and trunk open
well for starters there is many factors at play here. 1. battery chargers need to be on and battery disconnected. make sure if it has a timer it did not run out and (the charger may also have an internal fues/ relay ) if it gets too hot it shut off. Was the charger on a high enough setting to compenstate for the drain and is your battery good enough to be charged even. constantly drained batteries will actully not hold a charge after awhile. most parts or even walmart can check batteries free>
The trunk lights and fuel door on the same fuse? otherwise I would say the trunk has a bad switch that is not making contact or is making poor contact and acting as the trunk is open. it may just be pinched wires that rubbed together make contact with your cars steel body. They may be seen in the trunk follow the wires from the release switch and see if it connects anyplace near the fuel door. I am sure it will.
SOURCE: I have a '95 Cadillac Deville' and about a month
trunk light may be staying on. you need to remove rear seat to get to the lock so you can open it again. Best way to do this is to leave the rear seat out (for air, just in case) and get in the trunk (with tools so you can get out if you need to.) That way you can see what the lock is doing and if the light is on closed. Have someone stay there while you are working so if you have a problem, they can help. (from experience... I once spent two hours under a car with a very heavy transmission on top of me!!! A long time ago but you don't forget stuff like that.)

SOUNDS LIKE YOUR DEALER BOUND. SORRY, BEST BET FOR AN ESCALADE.
To open the lift gate manually, use the door unlock switch located
on the drivers door. This should unlock the lift gate as well. Go to the lift
gate and lift the handle to open the rear gate.
Your power lift gate is computer controlled. Sometimes there will
be a faulty input sensor or part that will show the incorrect data to the computer,
therefore the computer will not go through its normal functions.
In most cases its the problem of lift gate latch assembly.
To get it tested and confirmed there is a troubleshoot guide
provided by the service center. To perform this troubleshooting guide you will
require a scan tool to diagnose the exact problem.
the troubleshooting procedure is as follows:---
Please use the following information below when diagnosing an inoperative
lift gate. Disconnect the connector at the lift
gate latch assembly. With the lift gate latch connector disconnected, the 3
signals for the ratchet, pawl, and the sector should be inactive on the scan
tool.
Install a 3A fused jumper wire between each signal circuit
terminal (for the pawl, sector, and ratchet) and the ground circuit terminal 2.
Monitor the scan tool as each individual circuit is jumped to ground, the scan
tool should read "active".
If either tests above fails, check the wiring for the signal
circuits, low reference circuit, or try a power lift gate control module from a known good vehicle. If both tests above pass, monitor the internal switch inputs in
the lift gate latch assembly for proper operation.
3. A) with the lift gate in the open position, the ratchet and the
pawl should read "active" and the sector should read
"inactive"
B) With the lift gate in the secondary latched position, the pawl
should read "Inactive" and the ratchet and sector should read
"active"
C) With the lift gate fully closed, the pawl, ratchet, and the
sector should all read "inactive".
4.If one of the internal lift gate latch assembly switch inputs
are not reading correctly in one of the positions above and the vehicles passes
test 1 and 2 above. Replace the lift gate latch assembly.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and
complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing
every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
This should help you.Thanks.Helpmech.
