Hi

Very common fault, is the key just spinning around? if so the ignition barrel is hot so you will need a new one, if you dont have time right now to fix it then turn tha car off turn the steering all the way right then put the key in the ignition while also turning full steering lock right, this often gives the barrel switch some grip and you can start the car.

Do you need more specific information on how to repair this yourself?

If so do get back to me and I will tell you how.

Regards

Dan

Bmw 316i 1998 ignition wont turn

Not familiar with the 316i but have had 97 M3 which exhibited similar trait. If the car is manual transmission try to gently pull the steering wheel to each direction while trying the key. If the vehicle is an automatic make sure the shift lever is all the way into the park position. In both cases it could be the safety interlock is causing the problem.
Depending on the mileage of the car - and for a 98 at an average yearly rate of 12K per year - I'm guessing the miles are up there, the ignition switch iteself could need replacing. If you have a good shop manual (Bentley) and posses mechanical abilities it is not too difficult.

Car won't turn over

Should be a 318i, what is the year? Have you checked relays, and depending on the year, these cars have ews modules that is a bit tricky to bypass. Unless your experienced at this on BMWs do not bypass ignition system. Hook the system back up using the factory key and try again.

Bmw 316i

hi markjones, the ignition switch can usually be removed without too much disassembly. First you will need to remove a plastic screw in the upper and lower trim covers. Seperate the covers. You should see a black plastic ring around the mechanical switch. gentley remove the ring. Next remove the rubber o-ring/band. With the key in the iginition and turned to almost to position 1, insert a heavy duty paper clip, or bmw special tool (about $30 from the dealer) into the small hole in the switch. There is a cam in the hole that needs to be twisted clockwise so the cylinder can be removed. When installing a new switch make sure to remove the little tab pice of metal that usually breaks off in the housing. Also be sure to make sure and reinstall the rubber ring/band because they are part of the ews system. If you key turns continuously, or is not able to be removed, the ignition housing and cylinder both will need replaced. Replacing the lock housing is about a 2 hour sequence and can be challenging. I would recommend a shop for that kind of repair.
