I needed to replace climate control unit on1997 Grand Am GT. Concerned with how to remove the cluster face panel w/o breaking it.

Heater & Air Conditioning

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the screws securing the cluster trim plate to the instrument panel.
  3. Tilt the top of the cluster trim plate downward releasing the clips that mount the bottom of the trim plate to the dash. Remove the trim plate.
  4. Remove the screws attaching the accessory trim center plate to the dash.
  5. Tilt the top of accessory trim plate downward releasing the clips that mount the bottom of the plate to the instrument panel. Remove the plate.
  6. Remove the screws attaching the control assembly to the dash.
  7. Remove the control assembly from the dash.
  8. Disconnect the control assembly electrical connectors.
  9. Remove the control assembly.

To install:

  1. Install the control assembly.
  2. Connect the control assembly electrical connectors.
  3. Install the control assembly attaching screws.
  4. Push the mounting clips into place and roll the top of the accessory trim plate upward into position.
  5. Install the screws attaching the accessory trim plate to the dash.
  6. Push the mounting clips into place and roll the top of the cluster trim plate upward into position.
  7. Install the screws attaching the cluster trim plate to the instrument panel.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.

    Adjustment


    After cable installation, move the temperature knob quickly from full cold to full hot position. At about two-thirds control travel, additional effort may be required to complete the adjustment. During adjustment, a "click" may be heard as the cable end is brought into proper position. The cable is now set and should provide uniform effort from full cold to full hot and back with audible temperature valve stop contact upon reaching these positions. If not, remove the cable end from the actuator and turn the eyelet until the cable end is flush with the end of the eyelet. Reinstall, then adjust the cable.

the heater core is removable from the climate control unit. The climate contriol unit has to be removed to replace it. The A/C system must be evacuated and lines removed as well as the dash, to access the climate control unit. The steam is coming from a leaking heater core.

The control panel for the heater and A/C must be removed. Suggest you get Chilton's manual from the library. It will take you through step by step with pictures. To summarize: 1) Remove trim panel covering radio and heater controls. 2) Remove radio. 3) Disconnect the two heater control cables from the control panel. The trick to removing the cables is to compress the "claw" spring holding the cable by pressing a screwdriver from the underside of the control panel to release each cable.4) Remove control panel. Take to a workbench. From the backside of the control panel at the top, notice two large holes through which you can access the V2 Toshiba bulb holders. Turn them a quarter turn to remove them and the bulbs. The bulb is a common #74 bulb.

Heater switch replacment
Hello! it's my job to make things as easy for the customer as possible...Therefore I must ask why you want to replace the heater switch? Is it because you have lost one or two of the switch speeds? Your vehicle is noted for loss of the Blower Motor Resistor...
Changing the Heater switch means removal of the Climate Control Assembly which is not the easiest of jobs...I've included the process...But are you sure the blower resistor is OK? If you have lost 1,2, or all blower motor speeds it's more than likely the Resistor pack. And a lot easier to change...

  1. Disconnect the climate control assembly vacuum connector...
  1. Disconnect the 5 climate control assembly electrical connectors...
  1. Remove the climate control assembly..
Removal of blower motor Switch:
  1. Remove the climate control assembly.
  1. Remove the blower motor switch knob.
  1. Remove the blower motor switch.
    1. Remove the screw.
    1. Remove the blower motor switch.

Removal of blower motor Resistor:

I have a 2002 pontiac grand prix doesn't blow any
    • 1 Start the engine of the car and allow it to run for a few minutes. Adjust the climate controls. If they do not feel right, then the problem is probably in the control panel. If the controls feel fine, but have no effect on the air then it is probably a blown fuse. If you cannot hear the accompanying blowing sound when the air is turned from low to high, then the problem is in the blower motor.
    • 2 Disconnect the black negative battery cable first when looking for the blower motor. Remove the trim panel and unplug the electrical connectors from the blower motor. Unscrew the retaining screws and remove the blower motor and fan.
    • 3 Check the control panel next. Disconnect the negative battery cable first. Remove the screws securing the cluster trim plate to the instrument panel and tilt the top of the cluster trim plate downward releasing the clips that mount the bottom of the trim plate to the dash.
    • 4 Remove the trim plate. Remove the screws attaching the accessory trim center plate to the dash. Tilt the top of the accessory trim plate downward releasing the clips that mount the bottom of the plate to the instrument panel.
    • 5 Use a screwdriver to unscrew the screws attaching the control assembly to the dash. Remove the control assembly from the dash. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the control assembly.
    • 6 Replace a blown fuse in your Grand Am easily. There are two interior fuse boxes in Grand Am, but the right fuse will be found on the passenger side. Open the door and pry off the side panel to the right of the dashboard. Use the guide on the inside of the panel to find the right fuse.

Probably the left side air temperature actuator is bad . electric motor that controls opening an closing of temp door in the HVAC case . No the computer doesn't need to be reset .

Removal Procedure
Remove the left instrument panel insulator. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
Remove the knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

Disconnect the electrical connector from the left air temperature actuator.
Remove the mounting screws from the left air temperature actuator.

Remove the left air temperature actuator.

Stock radio
removed the panel below the radio, clips hold it in and you have to yank it out without damage. then there are two 8mm head bolts behind that panel facing up. they hold the whole frame for the audio and climate controls. then push on that frame with your fingers to pop out the whole panel that the radio and the climate controls are mounted to. then simply disconnect the harnesses and remove the climate controls(three screws and the dials pop off). now you can get to the four 8mm bolts that hold the audio unit in.

HUD will not light up
If you peek down inside the windshield, you'll probably see the HUD is working. A common issue is that the adjustment spring will break, making the HUD invisible because it is adjusted out of range. The spring can be replaced by removing the cluster then the HUD unit.
