I have what is supposed to be an 8.8 from an explorer, now I can't get the proper shoes for it. Here's my axle tag # and the shoes have a pin that the screw adjuster pivots on and I cannot seem to find them for this diff. # 4L10 88 7FT9 (top) S615C R (bottom) I tried to match up my other 8.8 Brake parts and there were quite a few differences. Thanks

if it is a U shaped pin pry it open with a flat screw driver close it back with a pair of pliers if it breaks get a new one at local parts store

How to change rear wheel bearing on 2003 ford explorer 4x4

Remove all the bolts on rear differential except the 2 on the sides. Loosen the 2 remaining bolts 1/2 way and pry cover loose to drain gear grease, about 3 quarts. Once the cover is off , you will see the ring gear, and 2 small gears. The axle shaft is located insde those gears, but this is the tricky part.There is a silver pin, A little larger than your thumb,{you may have to turn
the ring gear to see] that goes from the top of the carrier through to the bottom[about 6 inches long].. There is a small bolt on one end[5/16 head] that needs to be removed before the silver pin will slide out.. Be careful not to turn axle or carrier once the pin is removed or you will turn gears out of the housing.As long as the pin is in you will be OK.Once the pin is
all the way out, push axle in to the center and "C" keeper will fall off. then carefully slide axle out. The "C" keeper holds the axle out and the silver pin keeps the axle in position. Push the axle ,after repair, all the way in and reinstall the "C" keeper,then just push axle back to reinstall silver pin

How do I get the rear axle seal out of a 1996 4 wheel drive explorer

There is a clip on the end of the axle. Here are the steps to remove clip.1 remove inspection cover and drain.2 identify large pin separating side gears in the carrier( the carrier is the thing the ring gear is bolted too). 3 Rotate carrier till you can see small bolt holding pin in carrier and remove bolt and pin. 4 push in on axle and clip should fall off , pull axle out when clip is off. Reverse steps to install.

How to remove brake rotors on a 1996 ford explorer

How to replace the rear brake pads on a 1995 through 2001 Ford Explorer The system utilizes a drum-in-hat type rear brake rotor. The integral drum allows the use of a drum-and-shoe type parking brake system. All other components are similar to their front disc brake components Remove the two bolts on either side of the brake hose with the rubber boots. Do not remove the four bolts where the axle ties in. The two bolts to be removed require a 10mm socket/wrench. Loosen the pads from the caliper Rotor Removal In order to take the rotors off (replace with new or have them machined), it is best to loosen the emergency brake shoes. To do this, behind the rotors, in the back there is a rubber plug, remove that and you can use a screw driver to engage the teeth of the adjusting screw, turn it clockwise to loosen, usually 10-20 teeth. Usually this means turn it downward. After this, it may still be difficult to get the rotors off without tapping them. Use a rubber mallet and hit them from behind. Before really whacking the rotor, make sure you have loosened the adjusting screw enough. It may take heavy swings of the rubber hammer to do this. It will eventually break loose. Parking Brake You might want to check the parking brake while you are here. To remove:
  • Remove the rear disc brake rotor.
  • Remove the outboard return spring.
  • Remove the adjusting screw spring.
  • Remove the rear brake shoe hold-down spring and pin.
  • Remove the brake shoe adjusting screw and nut.
  • Remove the front brake shoe hold-down spring and pin.
  • Remove both parking brake shoes and the inboard return spring.
  • Check the parking brake lever for excessive wear and replace as necessary.
To install:
  • Position the front parking brake shoe to the backing plate and install the hold-down pin and spring.
  • Install the rear parking brake shoe with the inboard return spring.
  • Position the brake shoe adjuster screw and nut on the shoes and install the rear shoe hold-down pin and spring.
  • Install the brake shoe adjuster spring.
  • Install the outboard return spring.
  • Adjust the parking brake shoes and install the rotor, caliper and wheel.
  • Lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
ADJUSTMENT
  • Measure the inside of the drum portion of the rear brake rotor
  • Remove the rear disc brake rotor.
  • Using Brake Adjustment Gauge D81L-1103-A or equivalent, measure the inside diameter of the drum portion of the rear disc brake rotor.
  • Subtract 0.020 in. (0.508mm) from the first measurement, adjust the brake shoes to that size
  • Adjust the parking brake adjuster screw until the outside diameter of the parking brake shoes measures 0.020 in. (0.508mm) less than the drum measurement.
  • Install the rear disc brake rotor.
Reassembly Reassembly is easy. Put new or machined rotors back on by sliding them over the lugs (they should slide on easily.) Loosen bleeder valve (having a catch bottle handy is good). Push calipers in slowly (using a c-clamp or large channel lock pliers), close bleeder valve. Put on pads. Lubricate metal clips with small amount of anti-seize. Re-adjust the emergency brake by turning the opposite direction from loosening. Refill the brake master cylinder

I cant figure out how to assemble the back brake shoes and springs back together

Maybe to late for this but if you do one side at a time just look at the other side for how they go together. Also the short shoe goes toward the front long toward the back.
1. Clean and inspect individual brake components.
2. Lubricate anchor pin an brake show contact pads on support plate with high temperature grease or
Lubriplate. See Fig. 41 .
3. Lubricate adjuster screw socket, nut, button, and screw thread surfaces with grease or Lubriplate.
4. Install the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever.
5. Install parking brake lever to the secondary shoe and install retaining clip.
6. Install primary shoe on support plate. Secure shoe with new spring retainers and pin.
7. Install spring on parking brake strut and engage strut in primary.
8. Install secondary shoe on support plate. See Fig. 42 . Insert strut in shoe and guide shoe onto anchor pin.
Temporarily secure shoe with restraining pin.
9. Install anchor plate and adjuster cable eyelet on support plate anchor pin.
10. Install cable guide in secondary shoe and position cable in guide.
CAUTION: Be sure the adjuster screws are installed on the correct brake unit. The adjuster screws are marked
"L" (left) or "R" (right) for identification
11. Assemble adjuster screw. See Fig. 43 . Then install adjuster screw between the brake shoes.
12. Install adjuster lever and spring, and connect adjuster cable to lever.
13. Install secondary shoe retainers and spring.
14. Install shoe spring. Connect spring to secondary shoe first, then to primary shoe.
15. Verify adjuster operation. Pull adjuster cable upward, cable should lift and rotate star wheel. Be sure
adjuster lever properly engages star wheel teeth.
16. Adjust brake shoes. See REAR BRAKE SHOES under ADJUSTMENTS.
17. Install wheel and tire assembly. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

How do you remove an axle on the right rear of a 1999 explorer? it has a leaking wheel seal.

1. Drain diff if it has a plug.
2. Remove rear cover
3. Undo cross pin bolt and slide the cross pin out of the carrier
4. Push axle shaft in so you can remove the C clip
axle retainers
5. Slide axle out of housing.
6. Remove axle seal and then replace axle seal
7. Reverse steps

The rear drum brakes:
  • Have internal shoes that expand against the brake drum (1126).
  • Are a single-anchor type.
  • Are actuated by one rear wheel cylinder (2262).
  • Have two pistons in the rear wheel cylinder (2261). One exerts force against the upper end of the primary shoe; the other exerts force against the upper end of the secondary shoe.
  • Adjust rear brake shoes and linings (2200) automatically.
  • Need manual brake adjustment if the adjusters are not operating properly or after the rear brake shoes and linings have been replaced.
When the brake pedal is applied, hydraulic fluid pressure forces the pistons in the rear wheel cylinder outward, moving the rear brake shoes and linings against the brake drum.
The rear drum brake system includes the parking brake mechanism. Refer to Section 206-05 .
