It's when the security light starts flashing that the infamous "chip" in the key becomes a nightmare to many. Gradually the car begins not cranking anymore or if it cranks it would start and die in a second. Randomly it will do this more and more often until it won't start anymore. VATS, PASSkey and Passlock immobilizer systems are killing cars all over North America, they have a short lifespan and are certainly more effective against owners than thieves. Here is how you save your car
1st trick, (if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my regal for more than a year. If its shuting down while running, im sorry i have no quick fix...

Cheap fix: Bypass the chip in your key. Temporary, but effective. Until the TDM (theft deterrent module) in the dash poops out, then you're kinda screwed. I was told that these types of key security systems have a 7-10 year life span. Sucks for us. This link explains the "Key Issue" pretty well.

Never worry again fix: Bypass the whole VATS/Passlock/passkey I or passkey II system entirely. Literally take it out, and throw it away. I just did this in my Regal. Took about an hour. Took longer to find the thing than it did to fix the problem. For a list of cars effected by this problem. See the NEWROCKIES link on the right side of their page......... They sell a unit for 200 bucks to totally bypass this system FOREVER. life time-money back and all that. Finally did this in my car. Well worth the 200 if you've looked into getting this replaced... Anywhere from 600-1000 bucks.

----- With this fix, you can take that whole Vats, passlock, passkey **** system out of your car all together. Good info on both sites

My neighbor changed the steering wheel on a 2001 suburban and now security light is on. Now the truck starts then dies. I need a passlock diagram

Sounds like you need to do a 30 minute security relearn. Basically turn the key to the run position, do not start. Leave it in the run position for approximately 10 minutes. The flashing security light will go out. Turn the key off for 5 seconds. Turn it back to the run position for another 10 minutes. Again the light will stop flashing. Tune the key off and repeat one more time. When the light stops flashing turn the key of and then start the vehicle.

There are also plenty of references to this online as well. Good luck.

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee - Security Key Flashing/ Wont Crank after dead battery

A flashing key symbol normally means an invalid key. Do you have an other key to try? That all the gauges stay at 0 seems to point to a PCI data bus problem. Was the jeep parked outside or at least standing in the rain? Many times water ingress in connector C200 up in the passengers footwell area is the problem. The connector must be removed, cleaned/dried and reconnected. Ofcourse the source of the water ingress must be found, which many times comes from the windshield.

I can't start my 1995 hyundai elantra after forgetting to turn off the lights when going for class. I try to jump start it but the car won't start and all the lights keep on flashing and flick

After connecting battery, try using key in drivers door to lock, and /or unlock. Try passenger if that doesn't work, as well as valet key if it came with one.

2002 malibu 3100 v-6 won't start, getting fuel and fire to all cylinders

if the security light is flashing than the anti theft is active. The anti theft shuts down the injectors and will not let the vehicle start.

You'll need a battery charger to do this. Hook up the battery charger to the battery.

Place the key in the igniton and attempt to start. Let the key return to the run postion and leave it there untill the light stops flashing. Turn the key off

Turn the key on (do not try to start) and wait for the light to stop flashing again.

turn the key off and then try to start the vehicle.

You can google search "resetting gm security" and find this info as well.

1999 CHEVY LUNINA WON'T START BATTERY AND

Check the dash once you turn the key to the run position the passlock runs a security check using a set resistance value through the chip in the key. If the security light begins to flash the reading it received was incorrect or it didn't get a reading at all. You can try reseting the value it is looking for by turning the key to start then releasing it. After 10 minutes turn it off then cycle it start again leaving it in on for 10 minutes then back to off then one more time. After the third cycle has completed for a total of 30 minutes. You should be able to turn the key on and start the vehicle. If the light continues to flash their is a problem with the chip in the key or the connections within the ignition its self. Both are common but a Pass Lock Relearn as described above will usually adapt to the poor connection values. Hope this helps.

Security light blinks car won't start disconnected the battery used a different key still won't start

need to reprogram the security system. turn the key to start position then to run . let the key stay on until the light stops flashing. repeat these steps 3 times then the car should start if there is not a problem with the pass-lock sensor in the ignition switch or the BCM( body control module).

My 2007 silverado was fine when i parked it last nite..now it wont start..plenty of battery and lights..but no ignition..and the steering wheel is not locked when in park..it will not start in park, or...

The steering wheel will not "lock" until you turn it about 45 degrees from center...this is normal. If your security light is flashing, there is a problem with your security system that is keeping you from starting the engine. Try this: Set the parking brake. Turn the ignition to the "RUN" position and wait about 10 minutes for the security light to stop flashing. When the light stops flashing, crank the engine without turning the key to the off position. If it starts, take the vehicle to get the security system checked. If it doesn't start, tow it. You probably need a new PassKey sensor.

Car want start factor security light flashing and car want start battery went dead and wont start since tried to jump start and everything won work

The factory security light will remain on - this is a standard feature indicating the car is dead.
First, unplug the hazard fuze in the engine bay (this will reset the ecu and remove the flashing)

Next, replace the battery with a new one (or one with proper charge) - keep in mind a small battery will not do anything for these cars, the engines require a lot to push them over (it isnt a honda)
*Make sure to clean the positive and negative battery cables from acid

Then just start it up :)

Security lights flashing after battery cable removal-no start

Anytime you disconnect and reconnect your battery, the factory alarm will arm upon reconnection and the truck will not start. You have to close your doors, then manually lock and unlock the door with your key. This should turn off the security system and you should be able to start the truck.
