Gas tank When I try to fill my gas tank the gas station pump nozzle shuts off when the tank is not even a quarter full, even when I fill at a very slow pace. I have to fill extremely slowly to finally get the tank near full. I have taken the car to several different stations to see if the gas station pump was the problem, but it happens wherever I go? The manual does not address this issue? Any thought?

Option 1 the easiest way is to jump the fuel pump relay with the fuel feed line at the engine disconnected from the engine and connected to some sort of catch basin (bucket, gas can, etc.) this allows you to use the vehicles fuel pump to drain the fuel. All you have to do is find the fuel pump relay, then jump the positive side (key off) to power to make the fuel pump run, use that to pump all the bad fuel out.

Option 2 is to remove the filler neck and check valve from the tank (a real pain on that car)

Option 3 is to remove and drain the tank... this is the most costly and time consuming option as the alldata labor guide quotes 8 hours labor time.. so i would advise option 1

As for damage to the vehicle/engine that is always possible with a contaminated fuel, my advice would be just to get the bad fuel out as soon as possible, get good gas in it and give it a try.

SOURCE: 2002 Volvo S60 AWD Fuel door won't open

It more than likely may be the fuel pump. My girlfriend recently had the same problem with her S60 I came across a recall for the fuel pump. I took it by the dealers and they took care of it free of charge. The only negative thing I guess is that they kept it for a few days.

I would check rotor button (under the distributer cap) or the coil wire itself first. My guess is that you had a spark problem all along and they mis-diagnosed it in the begining.

Gas tank will not fill up on 2001 ford expedition

Gas as in gasoline or gas as in LPG gas? If its petrol, the fuel sender may be out of adjustment. (Usually means a new sender) If its LPG, the fuel stations are set to automatically shut off at 80% full. The gas tank will never actually be full to the brim but the gauge should be showing full if the gas nozzle keeps shutting off. Have a look on the LPG tank itself, they have a little gauge on them which shows how full it is. I have 2 tanks on my car , when "full" or when the pump shuts down, the tank gauges show just under full but the gauge on the cars dash shows full (2005 BA Ford)

When filling up the pump stops as if the tank is full. I know it's not as I can only pump about a quarter of a gallon of gas at a time. I can hold the handle so the flow of gas is so slow it will fill

run the fault codes as the problem is normally about venting and this is a purge valve for the canister problem. having said that there are lot of poorly designed fillers on the market that will not allow quick fills as the pump hose trigger keeps cutting of no no reason. You may have to just take your time when filling like most people do.
In this country lock fillers have been banned and you have to hold the trigger until the tank is full. Stops idiots from putting the nozzle in the tank and then wandering off and allowing the tank to over fill and create a dangerous situation..

When putting gas in my 2004 Kia amanit the fuel nozzle kicks off. How do I locate and fix the problem

HI Bridgette,

Due to the different shapes of fuel tank filler necks in cars & trucks, it may be necessary to vary one or more things to allow fuel to flow uninterrupted until the tank is really full.

The main problem can come from the new "vapor recovery" gasoline pumps. These pumps and hoses actually recover gasoline fumes from your tank as the liquid gasoline displaces the air / fumes in the tank is it is being filled. If gasoline flow is started at full blast, it can splash back slightly, causing liquid to be pulled back by the pump - so it shuts off. So, start with a slow rate of filling and gradually increase flow rate to maximum over 5 to 10 seconds. If it still shuts off, try some of the suggestions below.

First, don't fill at maximum flow rate from the pump - that is, don't set the nozzle for wide open. Select one of the other "latches" on the handle instead of the fastest flow and let the tank fill entirely at this rate.

Second, you should experiment a bit with the length of nozzle that you push into the tank's filler neck. If you push it in too far or too little, the pump nozzle can do what you're describing.

Third, try twisting the nozzle slightly so that it doesn't hang straight downward - a little to the left or right may provide a solution.

Lastly, try a different gas station. Their pumps may not be so picky with your tank's filler neck.

Good luck!

Having problem with trying to gas up the elantra. gas pump handle keeps clicking off. have to squeeze handle real lightly to fill up tank takes a long time to fill up. help

I know you probably won't like my answer, but seeing as I am a service tech for gas stations, the nozzle has a safety feature which shuts/kicks off when gas splashes back into the nozzle, thus keeping the gas from running over when the car is unattended and nozzle is locked. You can try pulling the nozzle back til it is barely in the tank or try a different gas station as some nozzles are different. As it is the shape of the fill tube on your vehicle. Hope this helped Tim

When pumping gas, the pump pops and shuts off like tank is full. It does this the hole time I am trying to fill the tank.

on the nozzle of the dispensers there is a safety kick off, this will activate whenever gas splashes back into the nozzle. there are two ways to make this not happen, the first is back the nozzle out so it does not have gas splashing back into the nozzle or find another gas station that have different nozzles.

Can't get gas into my 2002 Hyundai Accent.

The reason the gas station pump shuts off is when the fuel reaches the tip of the gas nozzle, so when you are filling your car and the gas nozzle (gas stations pipe) keeps shutting off it means that the pipe that runs to the gas tank is not open completely, what happens is when you pump the gas in the car the supply pipe from the gas tank opening to the tank fills up quickly and this causes the gas station pipe nozzle to shut off, have some body take down the gas tank and have a look at the gas tank opening and also gas supply pipe that runs from the gas filler opening ( on the car body) to the gas tank. Have a look at it and please don't forget to rate the answer if it was helpful, thanks!

Gas tank backs up when filling, shutting off hose

I have seen the same issue, the nozzles click off at some stations, others do not. One thing that I have tried and had a bit of success with is pressing the nozzle real tight against the filler hole. The rush of air coming up the filler neck is what clicks off the nozzle, not the fuel. So, pressing in tighter seems so let the pressure equalize in the filler neck. Try it, maybe it will work for you.

Pumping gas!

Try pumping the gas a little slower, or turn the nozzle in a different position, sometimes the gas will back up the filler tube, making it think it's full.

The fule tank vent tube is blocked/clogged. It's the little hole next to the filler hose that invites spiders that clog it up. Blow out the tube and it fixes the problem.
