I have a 1998 VW jetta I'm trying to change the spark plugs. I know the wiring order and the firing order. I just don't know how to tell if the engine is in the right position to be lined up with the...

If your trying to change spark plugs remove one wire from a plug, replace that plug, reinstall the wire onto that plug and move on to the next plug. You don;t need to worry about firing order unless you plan on changing the wires or the cap and rotor. Even if you where to change the wires if you did them one at a time than the new ones would be in the exact same place as the old ones and there is nothing to worry about,

How to change spark plugs in 2.5 misubishi in a 1998 sebring

Remove boot to spark plug using a boot puller. Unscrew spark plugs using a spark plug socket, extension, and ratchet.
Do them one at a time to avoid confusion. Installation is the reverse of the removal.
--- FIRING ORDERS NOTE: To avoid confusion, remove and tag the spark plug wires one at a time, for replacement. If a distributor is not keyed for installation with only one orientation, it could have been removed previously and rewired. The resultant wiring would hold the correct firing order, but could change the relative placement of the plug towers in relation to the engine. For this reason, it is imperative that you label all wires before disconnecting any of them. Also, before removal, compare the current wiring with the accompanying illustrations. If the current wiring does not match, make notes in your book to reflect how your engine is wired. Fig. 1: 2.0L and 2.4L Engines Firing Order: 1-3-4-2 Distributorless Ignition System 90902g01.gif
Fig. 2: 2.5L Engine Firing Order: 1-2-3-4-5-6 Distributor Rotation: Counterclockwise 90902g02.gif

Spark plugs

Firing order for the 4.0L 6-cylinder is as follows:

1-5-3-6-2-4

As for the spark plugs, it looks like the Autolite AL 985 plugs are what you need. If you are going to replace the plugs, might as well also replace the plug wires, the distributor cap and rotor (if you have those, I dont recall which year they went to the distributorless ignition).
