On my 2001 Mercedes s500, I have replaced the alternator twice and battery three time , yet still have problems with the battery dying . The dealer and my personal mechanic can not figure this out. Have you experienced or heard of this problem before. A long charge on the battery will get it started again. However, the problem will return. thanks, Andy

Yes if a recon backstreet alternator is used ,fit a genuine bosch factory exchange unit ,try disconnecting the battery and see if it still goes flat as usual cause is the diode pack in the alternator backfeeding to earth ,hence the bosch unit ,failing which go into the power distribution box and disconnect each circuit in turn to try to find the dran ,most cases it a boot light staying on ,another favourite is a boom boom amplifier staying on ,you know a boy racer big amp in the boot .On my 2001 Mercedes s500, - alicantecoli_17.pngalicantecoli_18.png

Many Thanks for the quick response.

Will you please elaborate more on the boot? Are you referring to the trunk light?? If so, what should be my approach to resolve.

Also, the boom boom amplifier, how do I isolate the problem to the amplifier?

    Thanks again!

So you do have a fancy amp in teh boot and massive speakers ,well remove the bulb in the boot if in doubt and disconnect the amplifier at the source ,ie the battery in the normal power take off for these and then see what happens

Add an aditional power or solonoid/starter switch to power the amp. For the boot you can change the lamp switch or fix an alternate on-off switch for the lamp to light up

Said alternator was bad

Bad alternator means no battery charge. Run the battery down without a charging means no power and engine will die. Charge the battery and put a meter on it to see if it goes to 14 volts with engine running. If stays under 13 volts with engine running, replace the alternator.

I have a 2001 c240 .. My problem is I can't let it sit for mre then 3 or 4 hours without it dying and needing a jump. I have replaced the battery twice.. I took it to mechanic n he tells me it's the fuel...

Has the new Battery been tested? has the charging system been tested? never assume anything, I got 3 defective batteries in a row once, used cheap discount auto parts store battery, never will make that mistake again. Kragen and Autozone parts stores will test the Battery and Alternator for free.
Another thing you need to have checked is are any interior lights staying on, go out at night and look, check the visor lights if equipped as well and the hood and trunk lights.

Battery light goes on and off. got new battery twice this year and it still dies. mechanic cannot find problem and says it's not the alternater. help, I never know when the battery is going to die.

ITS EITHER ALTERNATOR OR ALTERNATOR WIRES BROKEN OR DAMAGED.IF ALTERNATOR WIRES LOOKS OKAY.I WOULD REPLACE ALTERNATOR AND BATTERY CABLES.WHEN BATTERY LIGHT COMES ON ALTERNATOR IS NOT CHARGING BATTERY.REPLACING BATTERY TWICE A YEAR IS CHARGING PROBLEM.ALTERNATOR NOT DOING ITS JOB.IF YOU BUY ANOTHER ALTERNATOR BUY CORRECT AMP ALTERNATOR BUY WHAT FACTORY PUT IN.

I have replaced alternator two time and need another

take it to a dealer or a local shop because it sounds like you have a wiring problem. Try this first, start the car and remove the positive battery cable and if the car dies it is your alternator or a wiring problem, if it does not die that it is more that likely your battery. take your battery into advance auto parts or auto zone and have your battery tested. i would do the same with my alternator also.(Just to be safe)

Replacing the battery in a 2001 mercedes benz

Battery base has a device that clamps the battery on a step/notch on the side. Use a ratchet with an extension to loosen. Once it is loose you can remove the battery.
