My wife's 2001 Pontiac Aztek has the factory radio. The volume control is a knob (not buttons or slider). It's becoming increasingly erratic; you turn the knob down, and the volume goes up, or sometimes doesn't change at all. I've found that if you turn the knob very, very slowly, it usually mostly works, but can still take a long time to actually change.
I've tried taking the knob off and using one of those spray cans of air to try to clean it, but no good. Is there any way that this is user-fixable, or should we just buy a whole new radio?
When I turn on my radio, the volume is on and o.k. but when I try to turn it higher or lower the volume is lost completely. Any comments?
This is a common problem for this series of Pontiac radios. The volume control is a digital encoder rather than a variable resistor. There are services that will repair this for $50 to $100. Do a web search on "fix pontiac radio volume control".

I have this problem with my 1996 Mercedes.
I have the same problem on my 1997 Infiniti I-30 which has a Bose radio.
I had the same problem on my 1999 pathfinder with BOSE radio. I opened up the digital encoder, by unbending the little tabs, Cleaned the contacts with alcohol, Put it back together, It's as good as new. Good luck with yours
