How do i remove the heater core from a 1988 audi 90? ... my heater core blew and i was wondering if i can get to it from under the dash or if i will have to remove the entire dash to get to it?

• You have to make sure the plug is fitted properly. If it's popping out, it is not because of to much pressure, it's because of improper installation. I see it time and time again. Not cleaning the area and preparing the plug accordingly. rust, corrosion, improper installation all lead to the plugs popping out. If you paid take it to someone who will do it right. If this was a home job I suggest a complete Freeze Plug Installation Kit and clean the plug hole completely with sandpaper and see it fits permanently.

If it is necessary to remove the heater assembly, the cooling system must be drained before removing the heater core.
When a heater core leaks, a new heater core is installed or the old one repaired.
Heater Housing

• The heater housing is usually under the dash and must be removed to gain access to the heater core.
• Procedures for replacing the heater core vary with the year, make, and model of car. It threfore necessary to consult the manufacturer's repair manuals for the proper procedure for replacement.

The heater housing is disassembled to get to the heater core. Heater Core

• Remove the access panels(s) or the split heater/air conditioning case to gain acess to the heater core.
• Remove the heater coolant hoses.
• Remove the cable and/or vacuum control lines (if equipped).
• Remove the heater core securing brackets and/or clamps.
• Lift the core from the case. Do not use force. Take care not to damage the fins of the heater core when removing.
• To reinstall the heater core, reverse the removal steps.

When the heater core leaks and must be repaired or replaced, it is a very difficult and time-consuming job primarily because of the core's location deep within the firewall of the car. For this reason always leak test a replacement heater core before installation.

Replace heater core, usually under dash passenger side. you may get lucky and find yours removes under hood on passenger side .you will have to look Im not farmillier with your truck. if it can be taken out under the hood its not a bad job.under the dash is a lot tougher.

when u do this take your time, don't force anything, if it wouldn't come out then u missed a retainer somewhere, also the heater core requires taking apart the air ducting, and make sure everything is hooked back up, take allot of picture's before hand to document where everything goes, the manuals are for professional factory tech's and they assume allot of basic knowledge, in other words they don't spell out every little detail.

Yes remove the duct till You see core

I don't have that old of a shop manual but you usually have to open up the heater plenum case under the dash to acess the heater core. The disconnect fr the heater hoses is under the hood at the fire wall near the passenger side.

Heater Core Removal

1. Allow the engine to cool. Observe the safety precautions in Section 03-03 .
   

1. Place a thick cloth over the radiator cap. Turn the cap slowly to its first stop to release system pressure. When the pressure has been released, tighten the radiator cap.
   

1. Disconnect the heater water hoses (18472) from the heater core (18476). Plug the hoses.
   

1. Remove the glove compartment.
   

1. From inside the passenger compartment, remove the seven screws that attach the heater core cover (18B300) to the heater air plenum chamber (18471).
   

1. Disconnect the vacuum source. Leave the A/C plenum vacuum harness (18C581) attached to the heater core cover. Remove the heater core cover.
   

1. Remove the heater core from the heater air plenum chamber.

You have to pull the dash and all the lower fascia, then remove the box that houses the Heater Core Take the clamps off the heater hoses from the engine compartment side of the firewall and disconnect the heater hoses. Disconnect the bracket that holds the heater core in place from the inside of the passenger compartment (if present.) Carefully remove the heater core and discard it. Install a new heater core reversing the above steps.

the heater core is located under the dash in about the middle of the car.you will have to remove some of the hoses and vents under the dash to get to it to unhook it and put the new one in

Ok to replace the heater core in the allante you must first take the door off the glove box by removing 4 screws in the corners by the hinges. Remove the valence below the dash on the passenger side.

Now follow these steps

1. remove the radio module disconnect all wires and set it aside
2. Remove the bracket that holds the engine control module slide it out and away
3. Remove the duct control unit slide it down and out from under the dash
4 remove the screws that hold the duct work together, rotate to right and then down from under the dash
5. After the prior the heater core is in view. it has two 8 mm screws holding it in place remove them
6. Now go under the hood with a long extension loosen the clamps on the heater core
7. with at least a 12 inch thin bent flat screwdriver at a 90 degree angle loosen the hose and wiggle it off the heater core nipples
8. Go back into the cockpit and remove the heater core by sliding rearward and to the right
9. Angle hater core down and slide out.
10. reverse to reassemble.
