Can't shift out of park

The car starts fine and it seems to be idling fine but can shift the gear lever out of park. button wont press down. what do i need to do?

    1992 volvo will not go into gear after it is started. After starting and pressing the brakes it will not shift fro park but gear shift button does push down.

    when i try and shift, i have to do some weird jiggle thing in order for it to do so, or use both hands. it's really annoying.

    My 1992 Volvo 240 starts fine, but I can't get the shifter out of the park position. The button doesn't feel like it is going all the way down.

    02 ford taruus, cant shift out of park. Wiggling used to work. Appears to be the cable that is not releasing from where it is attatched . Thumb depression lever and cable assy appear to be working fine. Any Help would be great>

    Had problem for years, finally was able to get apart the console and found the BTSI solenoid was bad. View this link for details to replace it.http://aurorah.proboards.com/index.cgi?b...

    Got asolenoid from a junk yard for $6 and replaced it and it works great!

It's possible the shift lock solenoid, the wiring, or the fuse is bad.

On the floor shifter there is a yellow plastic thing you need to push sideways and pull the shifter back while it is pushed

Car wont shift out of park or into park easily
You mention the knob on the shifter is loose. Do you remember if the knob has always been loose or is this recent? I ask because I thought there was a button to push or a lever to lift to move the shifter into or out of R and P. So that you might not accidentally push the shifter into either of those settings and possibly damage the mechanism. If there is a lever or button, it might be that the button or lever doesn't fully disengage when you press it BECAUSE the knob on the shifter is loose. You might need to tighten the knob. Might need hex keys / Allen keys or small screwdrivers to tighten the knob. good luck.

1999 ram auto trans wont shift into park
you could need a throttle linkage adjustment. first check to see if your ram will start in "park" and "neutral" only. if it starts in any other gear=faulty neutral safety switch. replace. ok, now check linkage for proper adjustment...with engine off and in park...remove intake housing..disconnect cableend from attatchment stud on your throttle body..slide cable off the stud (carefully)..verify that the transmissionthrottle lever is fully forward (idle) position..and verify that the lever on the throttle body is at curb idle pos..insert small screwdriver under edge of the retaining clip and remove..center the cable end on attatchment stud to within 0.04", or 1mm. install retaining clip onto cable housing..check cable adjustment..be sure trans throttle lever and throttlr body lever move in sync with each other.

Shift lever not shifting out of park mode even though the engine is starting fine?
If your shift lever is on the stirring colum, there is a button in the colum itself directly underneath the lever that usually retracts whrn you press the breaks, but in this case it isn;t. Simply remove the right portion of the stirring colum and press the button and put in gear while holding it that is a quick solution on putting it in gear but it is not a permenent fix.
