My 2001 S type Jag felt like something slipped when I pushed the break. Shortly the abs light and then break light came on, with the dash board message, TRACTION CONTROL FAULT. Seems to feel like break is tight. Is this safe to drive to the service dept?

Your abs and traction control lights should only come on when you start to slide while breaking(ABS), and when your wheels spin in place when excelerating(TC). If those 2 things don't happen, which with some people they never do, you should never see the lights come on. Only when those mechanisms are in use do the lights come on. And they will always flicker as that is what abs and tc are, intermitant surges to break up the constant. ABS does this for obvious reasons...anti lock break, so when you slide, the abs "taps" the breaks in short bursts so they don't lock up. TC "taps" the exclelrator when it slips. Those "taps" are what trigger the lights on your dash, which is why they flicker and don't stay on.
Something is wrong with the ABS system. After the ABS system runs through it's self check when you get moving, it find a fault in the system. Do you have a code??? Go to any good auto parts store that will come out a check the codes for FREE. Call them first.
have you tried to replace the speed sensor in the rear end my 99 durango did basically the same thing speedo wasnt working right brake lights on dash check engine light on
Get your abs checked out. If you want, check it yourself on an empty street, just be ready to have a dead spot on your tires if your not quick.
drive as at a decent speed where allowed (5 mph should be good) and floor the breaks... If your abs works, then you need to find out why the light is on. If they dont work, then you know that something is wrong with the ABS module in your car and also need to get it checked out.
Listen to the car... if it tells you somethings wrong (ie- lights on the dash..) usually something is.
speedometer get speed signal from ABS. ABS and DSC are two functionality in same ECU. You shall read faults from ABS/DSC ECU. Most frequently, there are problems with speed sensors on wheels. With ignition on, you shall measure voltage on both wires (- pole of voltmeter shall be connected on vehicle ground). You will see one sensor without voltage supply. This will sensor with problem. you can, for check, change sensors on same axle (left and right). Switch ignition off, and on. If voltage supply missing will go on another side (with faulty sensor), you will be sure that is problem is sensor.
