If it worked a few times, the wiring is probably correct. Your symptom indicates a low battery or bad connection. Clean and tighten battery terminals as well as where the cables connect to the engine and starter. Try jump starting. If it jump starts, check the voltage at the battety with the truck running. Voltage should be at least 14vdc. If not, remove the alternator and have it tested at your local parts store.
You might not be getting the fuel you need.
Check the fuel pressure under load.
Check the linkage for sticking at high throttle.
Check the fuel filter
Check your Vacuum advance to be sure it is advancing the distributor correctly
For old diesel engines. Some starting issues may be solved by upgrading your starter and checking your electrical system if it's providing enough power for the starter.
Please be more specific on what do you mean by "hard" it could be more than one problem... it could be the starter, ignition switch,fuel,electrical,etc... so please tell me what is exactly happening with you when you try to start the vehicle... Thanks In Advance!
if you hear a loud click from starter it could be the motor contacts in the starter have gone bad. you will have to remove starter and have it repaired or replaced. check again to make sure that the battery is charged up on truck. also check for a loose ground wire to starter or engine block.
Make sure your battery cables are good and the wire leading to the starter is good with good connections. Still having a problem your engine ground is probably not very good. I added another ground from frame to block on my truck to fix this same problem.
disconnect the positive side cable on the battery. then unbolt the positive battery cable on the starter. then unblug the ignition wire from the starter. then get a 14mm wobbley socket and pull off the starter.
you can only really see it from under the vehicle i had the same prob but i found it. its behind the bell housing and in front of the oil pan if your laying under the car with your feet out in front of the car, look to follow the same sort of wires that come off the battery to the starter. It is above part of the exhaust and is close to the driver side wheel well.
