I have a 2000 Ford Explorer 4.0L. It has been sitting for over a year and now won't start. I have narrowed it down to the fuel. If you spray fuel into the throttle body it will start up and run for one second and then dies. How should I go about diagnosing this problem?

You will need to drain the gas tank(removal will be necessary as they are anti siphon tanks) and fuel lines as the gas has turned to turpentine. you may also need to clean the injectors(if the gas has turned to turpentine the gas has most likely eaten the seals(o rings) for the injectors.) you will also want to change the fuel filter and run some clean good gas through the lines before you connect everything back up.
other than those things and changing the oil you should be okay.

I agree that the fuel should be totally drained from the tank siphoned i.e. But depending on the miles you have, the fuel pump in the gas tank would be a likely culprit. I have a 1995 Explorer that ecountered thisproblem (hard starting or intemittent/non) that it will cost you to have someone or yourself to drop the tank and replace the pump The pump is pretty cheap ($60-80) the labor is not (5 hours @90-100 hr.) Good luck.

I have a 2009 Ford Edge and after sitting overnight it won't start in the morning. It will crank but not turn over. Then later on in the day will start just fine

If it is cranking, it is turning over! It is cranking and not firing, or starting.

intermittent problems are difficult to diagnose. Clean the Throttle Body and the Mass Air Fuel Sensor to start with. If that doesn't fix it, you need someone with a high level scan tool computer to read the freeze frame data when the issue happened.

It is is bad in the morning, it might be condensation if the vehicle is left outside. This is the time of year when condensation is high. Spray WD40 on plug leads and electrics.

2003 ford Taurus been sitting up try to start just spins over want start

Crank but no start is either no spark or no fuel to engine.
Best way to narrow it down is to just spray a 1 second dose of starting fluid into the air intake before you try to start it. If it does start then die it is lack of fuel or bad fuel to engine. In all the modern EFI cars the most likely faults on fuel failure with fuel in car are:
1. fuel pump failure.
2. fuel pump relay
3. fuel filter plug

If it fails to fire on the starting fluid it is lack of spark, and the trouble shooting procedure will be to investigate the coil pack.

2000 ford 4.0 explorer cranks but fails to start. It acts like it starts after sitting all night but then only cranks, what is wrong?

Check for spark to the sparkplug. Try a shot of starting fluid as having gas pumping and having the fuel injectors opening are 2 different things. If you have spark, then the fuel injectors may not be working. Quick diagnosis is to use starting fluid and see if engine tries to run. This indicates problem is not lack of spark but lack of fuel getting into cylinders.

I have a 2000 Chevy Impala LS 3.8L and it dies when driving it down the road and won't start again. When we get it to the garage and it sits for a while it starts right back up and nothing shows up on the...

A little shot of quick start, or WD-40 in to the throttle body intake when it won't start, will at least let you know if lack of fuel or spark is your culprit. If it fires up for a second or so after a spray, then it's fuel delivery related. Helps mechanic narrow down area of trouble.

My ford taurus 2000 don't start at day light but it would at night time with no problem at all.

This sounds like a poss fuel pump problem, do this test, get a can of spray starting fluid from any auto parts store, when it won't start remove the hose to the engine from the air filter and spray some starting fluid in while the engine is cranked, if it starts then u have a sticking electric fuel pump, the other thing u need to do is get the electronic engine control computer tested for fault codes, any Kragen or Autozone does this for free, these codes will help narrow down any problem in the system.

2000 Explorer cranks over good but just will not start.

Try spraying with starting fluid. If it starts, it is your fuel pump that is not working. Good luck.

Have 96 explorer that will sputter and not always start for about a half an hour if it sits for a short time

This is a classic fuel pump issue. When it doesn't start spray some brake cleaner into the throttle body. If it starts then the fuel pump is weak.

Trcuck will not start, cranks but will not start

If it almost starts when you spray into the intake, then it has spark. It sounds like it's time for a fuel pump.
