Sure. 2.5 liter engine, right? Thanks for using FixYa!

Secure the head in place with the mounting bolts. Coat each bolts with clean engine oil, and hand-tighten. Tighten the cylinder head bolts to the following specifications:

  1. Step 1: all bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
  2. Step 2: all bolts to 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm).
  3. Step 3: loosen all bolts by 180 degrees, then loosen an additional 180 degrees.
  4. Step 4: bolts 1 and 2 to 25 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  5. Step 5: bolts 3, 4, 5 and 6 to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  6. Step 6: all bolts plus 80-90 degrees.
  7. Step 7: All bolts plus 80-90 degrees.

I found your solution at:
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/repairinfo/repairguide/repairGuideContent.jsp?pageId=0996b43f8037a891

loosening sequence differs from tightening sequence.
loosening sequence:

tightening sequence:

tighten each bolt in the sequence shown in 3 successive steps:
step 1: tighten all bolts to 22 ft-lbs (29 Nm)
step 2: 43 ft-lbs (59 Nm)
step 3: 47 ft-lbs (64 Nm).

intake manifold bolts: 13-16 ft-lbs (18-22 Nm)
turbo-charged engines with EGR pipe: 23-27 ft-lbs (31-37 Nm).

My info covers only the 1.8 Liter engine. Jturcotte covers the 2.5L nicely.

99 subaru outback legacy. I got a bad knocking noise in the front, its coming from the area flywheel & torque converter, I don't know what its called, some say its third member or transfer case or...

If the noise is coming from the area you say it could be loose torque converter bolts or a cracked flexplate. If you do not have one, a stethascope is available at the auto parts stores and that will help pinpoint the area where it is coming from.

I have a 1997 Subaru Legacy Outback AWD. The

when you replaced the plugs , was one of them (cylinder 1 ) dirty and fouled ?
I'm thinking that bad rings in cylinder would give you low compression , and eventualy cause the missfire by fouling up the plug.
There is an inexpensive product that will help with the compression by filling up scratches in the cylinder walls. It is called Restore , and it is one of the only products of its type that I have used , and feel actually works.
Unfortunately , if your rings are broken , or badly worn , nothing in a bottle will fix them.

If your car had a distributor cap and rotor , I would change them too.
