Let's say that the battery and it's cables are good and charged and tight. and clean. You walk up and unlock the car and get in and close the door ( is the security light on? ) if it is can you put in the key and turn it on and does the security light go out? If it does'nt then you'll need to reset the security system. The GM way. With the doors all closed and the driver window down, reach in and turn the key to start and let go. the security light will be on steady, between 10 and 15 minutes it'll be out. Turn the key off and turn it back on and the security light will be back on, agian wait till it goes out. Again after it's out turn it off and wait a sec. and turn it back on, the light will come back on. again wait till it goes back out. this time ( the third time ) turn the key off wait a sec and then turn it to start and if everythings alright it'll start right up or crank OK and you'll have to finde another problem but the security system is'nt going to be it. If you battery is'nt good enough to do this you need a new battery anyway and your going to have all kinds of troble till you chcnge it.
If the key is worn you can assume that the cylinder is worn as well. Sometimes a worn key will not be accepted and the security system will activate and when you try to start the truck, the fuel pump will run for a second or two sufficient enough to start the motor for a brief couple seconds and then the pump shuts down and the motor stops. If this happens, then the problem is as mentioned above. The keys do not have any security chips in them only the cylinder. Worse case scenario, you will need to go to a dealer who will replace the cylinder, new keys and code the cylinder. I am having the same issue and I no longer use the older most worn of the two keys I have. Good luck.
You asked the color of the wire going to the starter to the switch. It's nor that simple as the nuetral safty switch is on the way and the security system is too. Your other responder isnt right as thier is too a chip in the key, so a copied key won't start the car unless it has a programmed transponder key. Any key can be taught to be reconized just all the keys to be reconized have to be programmed in at the same time. A key with the right cut can be reconized but turning the key to start and left to run till the security light goes out. ( about 15 minutes) with the light out turn the key off and then back on and the security light will be back on. Again wait till the light goes out. Do this again and as the light goes out the third time turn the key off and then back to start and start the car. If this sounds like the battery has to be fully charged and good that's right. If trhe battery were to go dead over a draw and completly dead and then a jump was connected the system may have to reset this way. The wire is Green at the starter.
Ihave a 2003 Sonoma, and have many keys cut, none with a chip and all of the keys will start the truck.
