I recently purchase a 2008 PT Cruiser. The battery light came on while driving and the engine died. I managed to pull the cover to the shoulder of the road and it restarted. I was told it was a bad battery....so I purchased a new one. The next day the battery light came on and the engine stopped while driving. I took it to a Chrysler dealer and they said it was a bad computer. They replaced the computer. Within a day the same problem occurred....battery light and the engine stopped. I took it back to the deal and they said the alternator was bad. They replaced the alternator and they claimed the alternator was over charging and the battery will have to be replaced..again. Now with a new battery (the second one in a week) a new alternator and a new computer, I was assured my problems were over!! This morning on the way home from church...the battery light came on again! The engine did not shut off....but I nursed it back to my garage and there it sits! What do you think could be wrong? Gary

Both battery terminals-- replace with full brass ones

alternator should have come first then battery

if a new alternator was fitted wont be the problem
if a refurbished/rebuilt alternator was fitted
they have a failure rate

whats left
could be a parasitic draw from the ignition or starter motor wirings
check 12 volts is getting from positive battery terminal to starter motor

replacing computer was a wasted brain frt idea

SOURCE: Change the thermostat on 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Hi, i have put together a step by step guide that will help you with this replacement job. Make sure the vehicle is in a cool state before starting this job.

* Drain some coolant into a clean container until the coolant level is below the thermostat housing.
* Remove the upper radiator hose connection from the thermostat housing.
* Loosen the housing bolts and remove the housing.
* Remove the gasket and scrape it carefully from the surface of the housing and the mounting surface on the engine. If the gasket remains on either of the surfaces, there will probably bea coolant leak after reassembly. Some engines use a rubber O-ring to seal a thermostat housing.
* Compare the size of the thermostat to the old one. They are of different sizes, types, and temperature ratings.
* The temperature rating is stamped on the sensing bulb on the bottom of the thermostat. The temperature bulb faces the block.
* When replacing a thermostat, be sure that the thermostat fits into the groove in the block or outlet housing. If the thermostat is installed upside down, the engine will overheat.
* Install the gasket.
* Reinstall the thermostat housing. Refill the system and run the engine or pressure test to check for leaks.
* When the engine has reached operating temperature make sure the thermostat opens.
* You should be able to see coolant circulating within the radiator.
* Another way of checking thermostat operation is to feel the top of the radiator hose or use a thermometer or multimeter with a temperature probe to confirm that the coolant is warming up.
* If the engine is overheating, but the top hose is still cool to the touch, the thermostat is stuck closed and must be replaced.

NOTE
When a paper gasket is used and the recess is in the thermostat housing, it is a good practice to position the thermostat into the recess and glue the gasket to hold it in place. If it falls out of its groove during installation, the outlet housing can be cracked or a coolant leak will result. Before tightening the water outlet housing, try to rock it back and forth to be sure it is flush. Housings are often cracked during this step.

2008 Chrysler P T Cruiser. I recently replaced the starter and then my battery. I thought went dead but that isn't the issue. The car will crank but won't start.

Question edited for clarity. Spelling of 'Cruiser', and 'want' to 'won't', which is a contraction of 'will not'.
Question moved to model category.

By removing the battery, you activated the anti-theft system and engine immobilizer.

Rather then guessing as to what the problem is , test . Is there a security light lit on the instrument cluster ? Does the vehicle have fuel pressure , spark ? Does the check engine light come on with the key in run position ?

I would want to know what the trouble codes are in the computer since the check engine light is on.
Those codes would help you or a mechanic know where to start checking.
If the alternator is not charging the battery, and you know for a fact the battery and alternator are ok, the problem could be a fuse or fuseable link wire, or the computer.

2008 pt cruiser - check engine light came on, within minutes it started to "power down" and and died. Won't start. What could cause this? BTW have changed spark plugs, camshaft sensore, cranks

My PT did that when my timing belt broke. It cost $500.00 to replace it. If it is broken, be ready to have some motor work done. I had to have to values replaced at a cost of $900.00. If your timing belt is not broken then check the alternator and battery. I was riding down the road and my PT shut all the way down and would not start. I had to leave it beside the road. It was my alternator. It gave me no warning.

OK, the starter turns the engine over, and you can hear (?) the fuel pump. Check
* is there any spark? Use a timing light to check. If no spark, then the spark generation system (coil(s), igniter or other) is not working.

If there is spark, then pull the timing belt covers and check that you have not slipped a few teeth. If the PT has an interference engine (as I suspect), you may have bent some valves.

If the timing belt is OK, do a compression test.

When you turn on the ignition, does the Check Engine light flash then turn off? Could be a failing / failed ECU.

Check wiring in your. I also own a Chrysler and the electric map manual says that it can be the battery the alternator or the car's wiring. Check for faulty wires and fuses, also for a short circuit (those can make battery die in a short time depending on how intense they are)
