As I said the engine is idling perfect but being in park won;t accelerate over 3000 rpm ! Is shaking is coughing but will start normally will idle perfect even when is cold or hot! I suspect the MAF sensor or catalytic converter clogged I was wondering if is any easy way to check to catt.Could be also a MAP sensor?
Having all the same symptoms...checked the coolant resevoir and it was empty. Refilled it and topped off the radiator which needed some too. My temp gauge is already on the fritz so I didn't believe that my car was running hot....we'll see how this works! How do i reset the check engine light?
I would like to get an engine manual for 1997 nissan maxima
Were you able to fix your car? My car had the same problem but it was because i failed to connect the air intake sensor where the air filter was at and the problem was no longer there.
Do you have a check engine light with this?
What can happen is a code has caused the engine to protect itself. For example in a low coolant situation when the engine heats up too much, the engine can Knock causing an Engine Knock fault.
If that occurs you will recieve a fault for each of these items. Fill the engine with coolant. Then reseting the code will let your engine accelerate normally.
Could also be fuel filter/pump.
Nothing is easy when it comes to older exhaust systems... But if you want to bypass the cat then do that. Seperate the exhaust system before the cat. But not before the oxygen sensors. It will be loud and just run it to verify if it's the problem. Cars are designed to have the cat there under normal conditions. Unlike older cars :)

Wow, this is all right on the money. I experience the same symptoms as OP and I was thinking of all the same expensive problems. The next day it started doing it again, and I looked at the temp gage and it was HOT! I had noticed some coolant spray in my engine compartment but could never find a leak. Finally discovered a crack in the radiator plastic hiding under the intake scoop. A new radiator wasn't quite as expensive as all the scenarios I had cooked up in my head. Now I just gotta replace that annoying cooling fan that's shot.
Won't review past 3000 rpm
