TDC compression stroke timing marks i need to know how - gm_car_cad_cts_04_tmg_mrks_tdc_comp.gif

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Timing belt cover
    • Crankshaft damper
  3. Rotate the crankshaft in the engine rotation direction, clockwise using the J 42098 or other suitable tool until the # 1 cylinder is at Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke. The reference marks on the camshaft gears should be aligned with the corresponding notches on the rear timing belt cover, as well as the mark on the crankshaft sprocket and oil pump housing. Timing marks 60 degrees from TDC

  4. Rotate the crankshaft counter clockwise using the J 42098 or other suitable tool until 60 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC). The 60 degrees BTDC point can be identified by the index mark on the oil pump cover. Using the J 42069-10 or other suitable tool gm_car_cad_cts_04_j42069-10.gif

  5. Install the J 42069-10 or other suitable tool to the crankshaft sprocket with the knurled bolt.
  6. Rotate the crankshaft in the engine rotational direction, clockwise using the J 42098 until the lever of the J 42069-10 or other suitable tool firmly contacts the water pump pulley flange. The # 1 cylinder is at TDC at this point.
  7. Secure the moveable lever of the tool to the water pump pulley flange. Tools in cam gears gm_car_cad_cts_04_tools_in_cam_grs.gif

  8. Install the J 42069-1 and the J 42069-2 or other suitable tools to the camshaft gears. If the J 42069-1 or the J 42069-2 or other suitable tools do not fit into the teeth of the camshaft gears, it may be necessary to loosen the upper idler pulley and turn the eccentric or camshaft gears until the tool can be inserted.
  9. Loosen the timing belt tensioner nut.
  10. Loosen the upper idler pulley bolt.
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Lower idler pulley bolt
    • Lower idler pulley and spacer
    • J 42069-10 or other suitable tool from the crankshaft sprocket WARNING
After timing belt is removed, never turn camshaft and crankshaft independently. Do not remove J 42069-1 and the J 42069-2 or other suitable tools while the belt is removed.

    Timing Belt & Sprockets

    To Install:

    WARNING
When installing a new or used timing belt, the directional arrows on the timing belt must be matched with the rotation of the crankshaft. Arrows are printed on the timing belt indicating the required direction of travel. When installing the timing belt, ensure the arrows are traveling clockwise

    Marks on timing belt

Install the timing belt with the engine at room temperature.
Start at the crankshaft sprocket by aligning the double dash TDC mark on the timing belt with the marks on the oil pump housing and on the crankshaft sprocket.

Use of J 42069-30 or other suitable tool

Wedge the J 42069-30 or other suitable tool between the oil pump housing and timing belt in order to prevent the belt teeth from jumping the crankshaft sprocket teeth.

            Installation of timing belt

Route the timing belt through the timing belt tensioner (B).
Slip the timing belt through camshaft gears 1 and 2 simultaneously (C), ensuring the dash marks on the timing belt align with the marks on the camshaft gears and the notches on the rear timing belt cover.
Route the timing belt through the upper idler pulley (D).
Slip the timing belt through camshaft gears 3 and 4 simultaneously (F), ensuring the dash marks on the timing belt align with the marks on the camshaft gears and the notches on the rear timing belt cover.

Timing marks @ 3 degrees BTDC

Using the J 42098 or other suitable tool, rotate the crankshaft counter clockwise to 3 degrees BTDC, allowing the timing belt to slide on the J 42069-30 or other suitable tool.
                        Install or connect the following:

Lower idler pulley and spacer with the timing belt
                              Lower idler pulley bolt

Torque to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)

Turn the crankshaft back to TDC

Turn the crankshaft back to TDC, using the J 42098 or other suitable tool.

    Timing Belt & Sprockets

Apply tension to the timing belt, at the upper idler pulley by turning the high point of the eccentric to approximately the 9 o'clock position the idler pulley locking bolt, while holding the eccentric with the J 42069-40 or other suitable tool, until snug.

Setting the initial timing belt tension

Rotate the tensioner eccentric counter clockwise to full stop, turn the eccentric back until the reference mark is 1 mm (0.03 inch) over the flange.
Tighten the timing belt tensioner locking nut until snug.

            Marks on timing belt

Inspect the alignment marks on the timing belt to ensure that they are aligned with the appropriate reference points on the camshaft gears, the rear timing belt cover and on the oil pump housing.

              Remove tools

Remove the J 42069-30 or other suitable tool, the J 42069-1 and the J 42069-2 or other suitable locking tools from the engine.

Rotate the crankshaft clockwise 2 revolutions using the J 42098 or other suitable tool until the # 1 cylinder is 60 degrees BTDC.

Using the J 42069-10 or other suitable tool

Install the J 42069-10 or other suitable tool to the crankshaft sprocket with the knurled bolt.

NOTE: The alignment marks on the timing belt will no longer align with the marks on the camshaft gears after one or more engine revolutions.

                        Timing marks aligned

Inspect the alignment of the reference marks on the camshaft gears with the notches on the rear timing belt cover, as well as the mark on the crankshaft sprocket and oil pump housing.
NOTE: The reference marks on both sets of the camshaft gears must match exactly with the marks on the J 42069-20 or other suitable tool checking gage.

Inspect timing gear alignment with J42069-20 or other suitable tool

Use the J 42069-20 to inspect the alignment of the camshaft gears 3 and 4.
Use the J 42069-20 to inspect the alignment of the camshaft gears 1 and 2.

                              Timing belt final tension

Loosen the timing belt eccentric locking nut.
Turn the eccentric counter clockwise to full stop, then back to the following specification:

NEW BELT - until the reference mark is 3 - 4 mm (0.11 - 0.157 inch) (1) above the datum line.
USED BELT - until the reference mark is aligned with the datum line.

Tighten the timing belt tensioner eccentric locking nut

Torque to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)

Tighten the upper idler pulley bolt

Hold the upper idler pulley eccentric in place with the J 42069-40 or other suitable tool

Torque to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)

Remove the J 42069-20 or other suitable tool from the camshaft gears.
Remove the J 42069-10 or other suitable tool from the engine.
                                            For final inspection::

Rotate the crankshaft in the engine rotational direction, clockwise 2 revolutions using the J 42098 or other suitable tool until reaching 60 degrees BTDC.
Install the J 42069-10 or other suitable tool to the crankshaft sprocket.
Rotate the crankshaft in the engine rotational direction, clockwise using the J 42098 until the lever of the J 42069-10 or other suitable tool firmly contacts the water pump pulley flange.
Secure the moveable lever of the tool to the water pump pulley flange.
Inspect the alignment of the reference marks on the camshaft gears with the notches on the rear timing belt cover, as well as the mark on the crankshaft sprocket and oil pump housing.
Use the J 42069-20 or other suitable tool to inspect the alignment of the camshaft gears 3 and 4.
Use the J 42069-20 or other suitable tool to inspect the alignment of the camshaft gears 1 and 2.
If the reference marks on the camshaft gears do not match exactly, timing belt adjustment IS REQUIRED.
If the reference marks match exactly, further timing belt adjustment IS NOT necessary. Continue with reassembly of the engine.
Remove the J 42069-10 and the J 42069-20 or other suitable tools.

                                                                Install or connect the following:

                                                                    Crankshaft damper
                                                                      Timing belt cover

Test drive the vehicle to confirm repairs.

I would recommend purchasing the manual and following the instructions page by page as outlined in the manual because it's kind of hard to cut and paste it from my online resource to fixya.com due to memory limitations.

Cadillac cts 2003 3.2l engine the timing belt jumped time i replaced the set it back on the timing marks an it didn't start i a code po 341 so replaced the camshaft position sensor didn't start

The same thing happened to my 03 CTS. The camshaft position sensor code is often thrown for a variety of reasons. In my case somehow the ECM went when the timing belt jumped (after the serpentine belt broke). It was a bear to diagnose but after installing a rebuilt ECM it runs great. (Don't make the mistake I made: the cylinder head gaskets will fit nicely on either side but if not placed on the correct sides you'll block the single oil port which provides engine oil to the head)

My friend owns a 2003 cadillac cts 3.2 ltr engine. he needs to replace his timing belt because it broke but there are multiple timing marks on the harmonic balancer and 4 marks on the block, so he doesnt...

If the timing belt broke, he should take it to have it replaced because theres more than likely to be bent valves in the head. Heads should be checked before putting another timeing belt on. If there is valve damage, then more than likely there damage to the pistons too.
