My guess is that the crank position sensor is out of position, or possibly the timing belt has become worn. Backfires and the hot converter are the clues - fuel is in the intake at the wrong time, and the exhaust is rich in un-burnt fuel.

Try cycling the ignition on and off three times, Turn the ignition to the run till the check engine light turns off on the dash and then turn it off and do it again three times to pressurize the fuel line. Then start it, your fuel filter may be dirt or the fuel check valve at the fuel pump may be bad making you loose your fuel prime. Start with replacing the fuel filter first and let me know if that helps and let me know if cycling the ignition to pressurize the fuel line helped.

Not to well versed on the S-10 electrical system but I would take a look at the voltage regulator.
It sounds like there is a malfunction that charges your battery sometimes but shorts out the alternator other times. Try having it tested or replace it
WD-40 will not do the trick for cleaning your terminals. WD-40 was developed during the 2nd WW to combat moisture in radio equipment in the South Pacific. WD stands for water displacement and the 40 is for formula #40. To clean the terminals you must disconnect them and use an abrasive such as emery cloth to remove the corrosion. They should be brite and shiny when you put them back together. I always cote mine wit dei-electric grease before re-assembly
