I have to replace my rotors on my 1997 GMC sierra Z71 about every three months due to warping. When I hit my brakes the truck will buck up and down something fierce. I took it to a few shops and all they want to do is replace my rotors but I need to know what is causing them to warp. Could it possibly be caused by the anti-lock braking system

What I think is your calipers are used to being in the outer extension of the piston stroke. when that happens sometimes moisture can set in and oxidize the piston surface, now when you shove the piston back into the caliper to clear the new pad it will stick to the walls of the bore and put to much pressure on the pads then come heat and warp. Next time you replace it buy the preloaded caliper and pad combo an bob your uncle, which mean you should be good. hope this helped.

SOURCE: gmc sierra z71 rotor problem

sounds like you have a worn wheel bearing which is replaced as a hub assembly the rotor just sits on the hub and wheel hold rotor tight

The first problem that I see is.....

You got screwed, the rear brake shoes and the parking brake shoes and the same thing. The parking brake uses your back brake pads to set the brake.

Sorry man

Hi joelalthomas, if they replaced your brakes and you never even made it home they had better warranty the work and as for the "it was a common problem on 2002-2004 trucks" well check for Chevy recalls as this is a safety issue that would have been corrected at no expense to the vehicle owner, do a little more research my friend and let me know what happens, I will check around a little as well in the meantime I would find a new garage.Do not pay any more as you said your brakes worked fine until they worked on it good luck to you As for your 4x4 did you look at the left side when you did the right side? and were they bled off properly? you can visually check to see if the calipers are functioning

SOURCE: Grinding and rattleing sound on the brakes of a 99 Gmc Sierra

If the brake peddle went to the floor it is indicating either a faulty master cylider or there is a breach in one of the brake lines. check the brake fliud for a low level and look for any leaks around the complete area of the ground under the truck for a stained road surface this will point you in the right direction inregards to where the rusted brake line or broken rubber brake hose is located, as for a grinding sound when applying brakes sometimes the inner pad and rotor surface is hard to inspect because the veiw is obstructed by the splash guard on the inner side of the rotor and brake caliper/pad assembly, the only effective way to check the rotors and pads is to remove the calipers and inspect, some guys use a small flashlight to peer through the small gap in between the caliper an spash shield to try to see the condition of the back surface of the rotor I don't prefer this method I like to be thourough. By the way a simple test to check the master cylider is as follows, with truck in park and engine running slowly agently push the brake pedal down if it goes nearly to the floor the master cylinder needs replacing especially if the brake fluid reservoir has not lost any fliud.

I have a 2001 GMC Sierra. My truck has the shakes when I hit the brakes. I have put brand new rotors on the front and it still does it. Can the rotors on the back cause the shakes as well? The brake pads...

That is usually caused by warped rotor discs. I know you said you just put on new ones, but has anyone put new tires or removed and replaced wheels on your truck. I have seen in the past, when they overtightin the lug nuts it warps the rotors.

All mechanics I have seen installing wheels have over torqued them.

I feel a pulsating in my brake pedal when I am coming to a stop, or when I am backing up. It usually happens when I am going 20 miles or less. I thought that it was due to icy/wet conditions, however this...

Your front brakes and rotors take on the most weight and stopping power, so it may be one of these that need attention. It could be the system needs to be bled, or the rotor could be warped, this happens when it's hot outside and you hit a water puddle it also happens in colder months as the rotors are cold and hitting or riding the brakes cause heat to increase warping the rotors. If one is warped, replace it, but if it's worn a little then it can be machined down. Good Luck....

How old are the brakes? It sounds like you may have a warped rotor.

Debree shields behind rear disc brake rotor rotted out.

Not hard to Replace. you will have to take the Caliper off of the Rotor and then Take the Rotor off, Repack the Bearings! And it is Right There!
