The oil pressure warning light is on with a wrench showing beside it. I just changed the oil and there are no leaks. Oil pressure is 45 on the pressure gauge. What is causing the light to stay on even after shutting the car off, wait a few minutes and restarting.

If you reset the monitor when you had the oil changed, and that light is for oil change due, the light should have stayed off.
Usually the wrench warning light is a service vehicle warning, not for oil change is due.
Your owners manual should explain each warning light.
You may have to get the body computer checked out by a shop or the dealer.

The red oil warning light tells the driver the engine has lost oil pressure and to not drive the truck.
You could be low on oil, or something may have happened to the oil pump or the pressure sensor.

I know of no such warning light on the 2006 Chevy Equinox that shows a wrench with an engine. The wrench with an oil can beside it means that there is scheduled maintenance required as listed in your owner's manual. You will see this when it it time to change the oil. The light that shows an engine is the Check Engine light and comes on when there is a problem with the emissions system. It requires that the ECU be scanned with a scan tool to retrieve the code that has been set. A trained professional will use this code to repair the problem.

If the valve lifters are quiet you most likely have oil pressure even with gauge showing "0".Sounds like the oil pressure switch going bad.I would try that first.

The oil pressure sender unit is located on the oil filter housing.These do tend to leak at times. The warning light for this switch is a red oil can and a buzzer. Replace the switch. If warning light still comes on, have the oil pressure checked. The oil level sender warning light is an orange oil can with oil level under it. This sender is fitted on the bottom of the oil sump and can leak past the seal. If warning light comes on, check oil level. If ok, check for damage to wiring under vehicle. Senders do some times become faulty.

The engine oil 'warnig' light being ON indicates that you have a BAD problem with your engine oil system: this indicates that your engine is not being lubricated properly (due to low pressure) and you should get it checked immediately!
Oil warning light ON can be caused by:
- Low Engine Oil level
- Blocked oil filter
- Leaking oil filter
- Leaking oil seals
- Faulty oil pressure sensor (pretty rare) or loose sensor connector
- Also heck the obvious like loose Oil Filler cap and dip stick seal.
Hope it heps and do not drive your car without resolving this issue first as you could easily blow the engine!

the oil pressure switch coud be going bad, may need an oil change or the mileage was not reset after the last one, or the oil pump could be going bad. I am more geared towards the first two possibilities.
