2002 chevy s10 crew cab when i go to shift gears the gear selector will show it is still in D when its in R and it takes a second for it to catch up, but when i shift it to P it doesnt register it, but it is in park. Looking at what it could be it sounds like the neutral safety switch. How hard are those to replace?

Sounds like it is stuck in second gear. Overdrive only drops rpm by a couple hundred. In third gears you should still be less than 3,000 rpm.

Second gear is a default gear when the transmission is in limp mode. Is the check engine light on? Does it shift if you manual shift through the gears with the gear selector?

as both gears are on the same selector lever I would be checking the selector shaft fork is tight on the shaft . Check that the pivot for the lever in the selector turret on top of the box is not loose or badly worn

linkige might be goiing out takes about 30 bucks at autozone for parts if you know how to put it on

Does it feel as if the vehicle is not "down shifting" into low gear when you approach the stoplight? If so, then the torque converter "lock up" for OVERDRIVE may not disengaging so the vehicle is stuck in high gear and it will kill the motor. If you switch to park and it starts right back up that might be the problem. A temporary fix is to disconnect a wire from the lock-up torque converter switch, but overdrive won't work and you wouldn't want to do a lot of highway driving until you replace the lock-up switch.

Your transmission has 3 shift rails...
1st - 2nd
3rd -4th
5th- Reverse

If your 3rd gear doesn't work , you have an internal transmission problem, such as a syncronizer, or similar fail... There is not much you can fix, without removeing the transmission.

My VW is not shifting into reverse at all; I think a certain person was driving and mistakenly pressed the gear shifter down for all gears--reverse is the only gear you press the shifter down first in. Doesn't grind, 1 2 3 and 4 work but no reverse no reverse lights.
I've read several complicated (can't see scenario's) posts on screens and linkage and a cable fixed one guys problem but still no solutions.

try pushing the gear selector button in and pulling the gear selector into 1st gear position, if it doesnt catch, leave it aligned with the "1" on the panel, let go of the button, then once the gear selector (shifter) is staionary int he 1 position pull back on it slightly without pusing in the button..

Hit the gas and see if it catches.. it is likely, you have a worn catch for the two gears that aren't grabbing.. if you hit speed bump or pot hole you may have to pull back on it genly while driving to get the gear back...

Is the rod still connected and actually changing the gear selector on the Trans? It will not start due to the N safety switch. You need to establish if trans is actually changing gears.
