Car makes a clicking sound and then the gauges go haywire. This had been happening for about a month, then we changed the alternator. Then it stopped for about a week, followed by the car dying while i was still driving it down the highway at 60 MPH. It's been down for about 2 weeks. We just replaced the battery and the alternator both today, even though they both passed their tests at auto zone. On my way home from work, my car started making the clicking sound again. What could cause this problem? I am tired of doing the process of elimination thing. HELP!!!

I posted the original problem...after a few different tries, we discovered that it was the ECM (the main computer). Once replaced, the car has not had a problem since!

SOURCE: Car wont start, no clicks no sound

make sure you have power getting to your starter when you crank. check the small nut on the starter. should have 12 v or very close to it. this will tell you if your getting power to the starter or if somethign before the starter and something maybe with your anti theft system or not. its hard to say online cause of that anti theft. doest the light flash at all? the anti theft light?

if your getting power to the starter when you crank make sure your getting good power to the starter by turning on the head lights and see if they dim. a good starter will cause the headlites to dim when attempting to start. if nothing dims check connections. or assume bad starter motor. make sure your also getting power to the main starter stud as well.

good luck

Eventually problem got bad enough that it could be located. In this case it was a bad Ignition switch module.

SOURCE: car turns over, but won't start

Too many choice.
3 main areas are fuel, spark, air.
Try a shot of ether, if it fires at all, it is a fuel problem.
Then we can get into more detail.

Need Help.

this once happened to my car. I was driving on expressway and all of a sudden car quit, then the gauges went haywire. and the dash light symbols all lite up.what my problem was is I just got done doing a major repair on car and forgot to tighten the alternator cable to alternator. cant say if you have the same problem but check this wire from alternator. battery voltage car off, 12.6 or better volts. when running you should have at least 14-14.2 or better at battery if alternator is ok. good-day !

If this problem is electrical, try disconnecting the alternator wires from the back of the alternator. If the rpm and voltage stabilize then change alternator .

Cqr drives then gauges go haywire then dies sits for a time starts drives for a while the gauges go haywire then dies

It sounds like an intermittent alternator/voltage regulator problem. I would suggest testing the alternator.

It very likely may be your alternator. I had the same problem. I took it to the dealership three times and the technicians were stumped as well. Finally, I found this article that talks about it, which led them to change the alternator:
