I HAVE A 97 CHEVY 1500 PICKUP WHEN I GO TO START IT IT TURNS OVER IT DOES HAVE SPARK. I JUST REPLACED THE FUEL FILTER TWO WEEKS AGO I CAN NOT HEAR THE FUEL PUMP TURN ON WHEN I TURN THE KEY.DOES THIS MEAN I HAVE TO BUY AND REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP? THATS ALOT OF MONEY OR IS THERE OTHER THING THAT I CAN CHECK FIRT? THANKS FOR ANY HELP
Your fuel pressure regulator could be bad also check fuel pressure with a guage it should be about 55 to 65 pounds
I know from exp if you cant here the pump when you turn the key, its the pump . I just replaced one myself.250.00 bucks
I hear a lot about people replacing pumps every few months... do these people also replace the fuel pressure regulator? this is a very important part that is known to fail on the vortecs
Good Day,
Generally not hearing the fuel pump when turning the key is caused by one of two things.
1.) Bad fuel pump (probably what you didn't want to hear)
2.) Pump is not getting power
Check all your fuses and relays, I'm pretty sure on your 97 you have 2 fuse panels, one in the truck and one under the hood. Also if you are handy with a meter check the wiring of the pump wih the meter from under the truck when the key is on, if you are getting 12volts or so on the pump directly then it's a bad pump. If after checking all fuses and none are blown it's gotta be the pump itself.
I wish you the best of luck and hope this helps

Ichanged the fuel pump 3 times withe the same results it works fine for 3-4 months and then it wont start again. today I tried to start the van and it didnt i would press the accelerator all the way to the floor and it started but there is a strong odor of gas. could it be something else besides the pump?
