2008 S40 Electric trunk release operates one day and not the next! Actually sometimes it works fine for several days and then for love or money will not open. When the pad above the licence plate is pushed it always make a soft wirring sound whether of not the trunk unlocks. Sometimes a have hit the trunk lid near the back and it will unlock, but more than 50% of the time I try that it will not. I have tried WD40 into the lock and checked for any obstructions. I have changed keys and the remote will always unlock the other doors OK. The emergency pull will open the trunk OK also. I have thought this is a temperature related problem as its been so cold here recently, but now I don't think so as it will still open sometimes and sometimes not no matter what the temperature is... I even tried warming the back of the trunk lid beneath the liceince plate with a hair dryer! It opened once that way...but not again. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

SOURCE: trunk will not open with or without key

hello theres really not many choices if you have a trunk key it should work if not and the inside trunk release isnt working either you could try to get at the lock setup from the back seat take your lower seat out remove the lower holding bolts slide up off the top lock setup see if theres enough room to work from there to pop the trunk open with a flash light and a screwdriver if not your going to have to pop the lock cylinder at your trunk once its out you can get a aftermarket replacement under $ 20 goodluck please rate

SOURCE: Volvo s40 rear doors wont open inside or outside

There is a child safety switch on the rear latch assembly that prevents opening from the inside handle. This switch may be on. Check your owners manual for more info.

SOURCE: 2002 Volvo S60 AWD Fuel door won't open

It more than likely may be the fuel pump. My girlfriend recently had the same problem with her S60 I came across a recall for the fuel pump. I took it by the dealers and they took care of it free of charge. The only negative thing I guess is that they kept it for a few days.

SOURCE: Hi, I bougth my new Volvo

If it is the same as the 2007 model.
The top of the key is a small slide switch.
You slide it and pull a vanity key out.If the glovebox has been locked it also possibly locks the boot with the same switch.
You will probably need to put key in glovebox lock and turn counter clockwise.
That key is to lock the seats to stop anyone getting into the boot via the fold down system as well.

Hope this helps.

2006 s40 volvo emergency trunk release wont work

try having someone jiggle the trunk up and down from the outside while you pull on the emergency release from the inside, you may have a problem with the wiring in the trunk itself, the wires have a problem chaffing where they come out of the trunk lid and go into the car, you can disconnect both ends and replace that for about $30

Trunk release not working

well. these items are primarily connected through the passenger compartment fuse panel. The rear view mirror may not be operating because they disconnected it when replacing the corner panel or possibly cut one of the wires while installing the new one.

As for the trunk latch release I would need to know if the switch is located on the door or by the floor. If it IS on the door then it could be a similar issue as explained in the previous solution.

Ghost Radio.

This will be a heat related issue, probably internally.
When the unit heats up something will move under the temp increase and contacts will fail, as it cools down it reverts back to original working position.

Has anyone else had trouble with the trunk latch on their Volvo S40 2005?

A problem I had with my 2003 BMW was that the wiring near the trunk hinge that feeds the lock mechanism had been bent back and forth enough times (I open my trunk several times a day) that some of the wires broke. The only way I could get in the trunk was by the mechanical key. The fob and the button release in the cabin did not work. I was able to access enough wiring before and after the hinge area to do a continuity check on the wires and at least a quarter of them had broken. Later I realized that the third center brake light (which is on the trunk lid) was out too. After some patience of unraveling all the wiring I was able to reconnect everything ... but it took several hours....
In your case I do not understand that your latch will not open. Usually if it is set in the lock position when open ... you can stick a screw driver in the mechanism and rotate back the engaging hook which then stays in the open position until you close the trunk again.
If that is not the case with yours, then the mechanism may indeed be toast.

Hi, I bougth my new Volvo S40 in 2008 and never had any problem since then. Today, I found that I can not open the trunk, although the rest of the doors open fine. The central locking systems works...

2006 Jetta 2.5 trunk latch operate when really cold

you need to remove the trim cover on the inside of the trunk lid. it sounds like the solenoid is jamming. the solenoid should flick out against a lever that will release the trunk lid and then return back again within a split second. if it stays out then it is jamming, and thus holding the truncks locking mechanism open.
the solenoid may also jam shut and therefor not release the lock. if you can see this happening then replace the solenoid.
