14 months ago my alternator failed in my 2005 Nissan Quest, and I had it replaced along with the battery. 2 weeks ago, the minivan started losing charge and went dead. I took it to a mechanic and was told that the battery, alternator, and 2 belts are okay. $140 later, they tighted 2 belts. It drove fine for 2 weeks, but now it does not hold a charge. I think that the battery is fine and am worried that the alternator is bad or it has a short.

There is a diode in the alternator which stops the battery from discharging back through the alt:windings, this can go open circuit,which is probably the problem

hi if the alternator is bad the brakes and battery lights will come on when the car is running if not then the alternator is ok , if you have more question please ask.
Often when you lose an alternator its because the battery is too weak. Then systems start failing everwhere. Have the battery tested, chances are its got a dead cell in and you'll want to change it asap or it will cause damage to alot of relays and sub systems.
With a multimeter check the voltage at battery terminals. Should be more than 12.6Volts when engine off, and at least 14 volts with engine on. If the battery voltage is less than 12.6 volts then you need a new battery. If the voltage is less than 14 Volts with running engine, then the alternator is not working properly. A stop at AutoZone might help. They scan codes, and check alternators for free.
check the alternator or belt. when running the alternator should read at least 14 to 14.5 at battery. with engine off, it should read at least 13 volts at battery. if the alternator is not charging right, not enough power will get to pcm,
Hi there, I am a girl (i.e. not car savvy), but I have a 1998 Altima as well, and the first time (4 months ago) I noticed the brake and battery lights on simultaneously, I took it to a Nissan service shop. Everything seemed fine until about a month ago when the symptoms returned. I ignored the problem for 3 days and the car just stopped running, period. Took it back to the shop, figured out it was a fauly alternator, got it sorted, no problem. Today (1 month after replacement), I see the same bloody problem, and I'm taking it back to the shop in the morning. I am wondering... is it the alternator, or something connected to the alternator that is malfunctioning? The 2 alternators put in were "rebuilt" since they didn't have genuine Nissan alternators available. I really hope the dealers aren't taking me for a merry ride.

you have a voltage drop.fine the damaged wire going fro mthe positive terminal of your battery to your alternator.fix this or it will keep working the alternator and draining your battery.
If the car is running and hasnt died or had any hard starts you probably just have a belt tensioner or pulley problem. You can read the charging voltage off the battery with a multimeter and should see a a change from ~12 volts to about 13-14 volts.
