Hello,
My 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee is currently a crank but no start. I have no MIL light when the key is turned on, no Volt or fuel gauge activilty when the key is turned on & no ALDL connection with a scanner plugged in. I get a "err" on the scanner. All fuses are good & I believe all relays to be good, I checked the pin voltages at the PCM connector & all seem ok, also there is voltage at the ALDL but no communication.
My wife drove to work, parked, locked it up & went inside. When she got off work, unlocked car, put things on floor of passenger side & attempted to start the Jeep with no results, crank but no start.
I have checked everything & my mechanic had it last week & all checked out good but there is no change from the first day of the problem.
Please let me know if you have any ideas, my next & last resort is to take it to the dealer.
Thanks you,
Jim
I just fixed the problem with the 96.
Crank no start
No fuel pressure
No spark
No volt gauge and no fuel gauge
No scanner obd working when hooked up says error no communication. With the help of this awesome guy randy from washington, i did some relay jumping, more wire tracing and found it was the crank sensor was shorting out with just the key on. with key on, locate the crank sensor behind the valve cover, unplug it and see if everything comes back on, this is what it did for me. Thanks again randy for the help and this gentleman can be reached @ http://www.aceautomotive1.com.
I'm having the same problem as these folks here with there jeep not starting and gauge lights are not working. Well, all of my gauges/lights are working.I did an engine scan...no engine code. I replaced fuel filter,wires,cap/rotor,plugs, because it was due. Checked for spark no current to coil or plugs. Not sure of fuel pressure I do not have tool. Replaced the distributor 2 yrs ago.
Could it be the ECU?
The jeep was running fine that Sunday night coming back from church. Monday morning tried to start it it cranked and cranked and would not start. Amp,fuel, oil temp gauges working,no engine light.
I'm stumped!
This is common for this model jeep its the factory anti theft device is malfunctioning remove the drivers side kick panel locate a purple and yellow wire in the black plug splice into this wire with a wire of the same guage and hit a chasis ground to disable anti theft system completly
I have the exact same jeep [1996 GC Limited] I bought new and I have done all the work myself. There are things that you learn that are quirks to its specific engineering and should not work, but do.
If in doubt, make sure the motor is not siezed, by turning the crank a little with a socket. Try to start. If it does, your crank pos sensor may be out, but this would rarely cause a no start. If this remedy works, research the operation of the CPS.
OK. now for the serious remedies. First, start the car using the gas pedal pumping method as you would and old carbureted car. If you can keep the car running only as long as you give it gas, and it dies when you let off the gas, your problem is a battery starting to lose its base charge. Replace the battery. This vehicle's anti-theft system reads any drop in base voltage as a reason to inhibit spark on closed-loop ignition circuit - a new battery will fix the entire problem. You may take the old battery for testing, the tech will tell you the battery is good. But in a few months your battery is going to fail, your jeep is just saving you the trouble of finding out the hard way.
Next, check to see that gas is getting to the engine and spark is reaching the plugs. They should be. If not, fix gas prob. or try spark again from neutral shift pos to ensure no shift cable problem. If it is the cable, refer to manual for NSS cable adjustment - it's not hard. Can the motor turn but not start from NSS problems? I've seen it.
Was the car jump started? If so remove the bat connection for 5 minutes and retry. I have had that problem before.
Intermittent problems w/ keyless entry? works locking but not unlocking? This could be the problem, though it is undocumented how this happens. Make sure remote is not a problem. Test by using key and lock only.
IF all else fails, try things you can get refunded if they prove not to be the problem. This sounds stupid, but has saved me in the past.
1. replace alternator - I did this once as it was the only thing left electrical. It worked. How a bad alternator prevented starting is beyond me to this day. Return if new one makes no difference.

My 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee cranks but dosen't start. I have
no MIL light when the key is turned on, no Volt or fuel gauge activilty
when the key is turned on & no ALDL connection with a scanner
plugged in. I get a "err" on the scanner. All fuses are good.
i have the same exact issues, exactly identical as my 1500's jeep. I am an ex mechanic, but this one is tough. took the pcm out and tried in my 97 jeep, starts right up so the computer is good. got no fuel pressure, no spark, and no volt and fuel guage. Motor cranks perfect, but no start. Could someone please give a good response.
My 1995 jeep has died several times I had computer replaced, started again and died and would not start, the obd codes do not show anything I replaced plugs, wires, rotar, fuel pump, any solutions
