Yes, my tailgate will not open in either diredtion, top slides, window opens, tailgate just "clicks" and moans with touch pad, just in the last 6 weeks!

  • Anonymous Aug 20, 2008

I have the same issue. Tailgate will not open at all. What a pain but you can hear it click when button is pushed. Top will not slide back and rear window will not rollup. I think its all tied to the sensor showing the tailgate is not latched. Any help on opening the tailgate is appreciated. Thanks

  • Anonymous Sep 03, 2008

I had the same problem and it required that the electronic latches be replaced. They are a snap if you have any do-it-yourself experience.

    SAME problem!!

  • sguell Nov 25, 2008

Maybe the same problem. My rear window came out of the chanel that runs it up and down. Need to be reglued back into those chanels or whatever fix would best fasten the window back to the chanels.

I have a similar problem. My tailgate will not open at all. I can unlock the doors, but the rear gate stays locked. It's malfunctioning is as if the doors are open because they won't lock...not even with my key remote. (If that makes any sense) It's soooooooooooooooo inconvenient not having a functioning rear gate.

Need to get the gate opened first! Will NOT budge!!!

  • penetente Mar 26, 2009

Same issue with the tailgate. Can't open it at all. And if that's not frustrating enough, the rear glass won't raise and my roof is stuck in the "open" position. I would check the sensors, but can't without getting the tailgate open.

The actuators have a white stem that sticks out of the bottom of them. if you push up on the ones on the driver side it will open the back hatch for you.

  • Anonymous Oct 18, 2011

I did notice the white stem and tried to move it up in the direction of the arrow but nothing happened. Does the window need to be down?

  • Anonymous May 01, 2013

where are the white stem located?

You will have to buy a whole new track system for the rear glass and it comes with a new moter. you can't just buy the the tracks seperate. (BOO) its about $400 and its farley easy to replace if you can get the back door open. i have a 2004 gmc envoy xuv. and had the same problem. hope this helps.

Lubricate well if you ever get it open once. I also tripped the latch by hand so the gate wont latch and hold the gate down with a bungee for fear of never getting it open again. I will lube it and if necessary I will replace the latch solenoid. $20.00 part. Check online for yourself under 'repair manual for xxx car'

I do not have the XUV model but I know that my Envoy has an electronic sounding latch lock when I close my tailgate. I would check the fuses and electrical connections. I hope that this helps.

Park on fairly level ground, While truck is on get out on the running board and use your body weight to rock the truck left to right vigorously. This should reset the tailgates tilt sensor. I just changed my window regulator and had to figure that one out. To open the tailgate you must enter from inside and located at the right are the latches, look closely you'll notice small brass pins with arrows pointing up direction, use tool to apply pressure upwards, I would recommend doing the lower one first then top; while constantly applying pressure to tailgate outwards or have a buddy pull on it while your doing that. You can buy the regulator which comes withe tracks and cables if your motor is still good. It costs about $140.00 at a dealer.

How to fix my rear tailgate window

check the fuse/relay. if it is neither of these check the switch with a multimeter. If you can hear the motor trying to move the glass when you try the switch it may be the regulator needs attention. It may be the motor needs to be replaced.

check fuse and relay along with the switch first then the regulator and motor afterwards. Replacing the small electronics is obviously easier than having to open up the tailgate to check the mechanics of the winedow.

2004 GMC Envoy XUV tailgate won't open downward. Tailgate will swing open but will not open downward. Nothing happens when pressing in on pressure pad/switch...it is as if there's no power going to it.

Do you live in a dusty area? My sister lives in dusty New Mexico and had a malfunctioning XUV tailgate. My reasoning was that something must tell the tailgate not to drop down if the glass is up, and if it can't tell, then it will only open sideways.
So we removed the trim panel, and the tailgate was indeed full of dust. By reaching my arm in, I found two plastic optical sensors which tell the gate whether the glass is up or down; both were coated with dust. After cleaning these the tailgate was back to its normal operation. The two sensors are flat, round - about the size of a nickel or dime...I couldn't see them, just found them by guessing that they must be there. Hope this helps!

2004 Envoy Xuv tailgate does not open.

pull the plastic off of the tailgate and make sure the small wire looking controls are still hooked up. sometimes they will pop out after alot of use. other thing is make sure the rear actuator is actually working (it could be bad)

2004 envoy xuv tailgate problems, will not latch or open sideways. I have a 02 Envoy SLT the rear liftgate Dose not have power. the wipers dont work the Lock dont work I can not program my keyless entry....

I also have a 2004 GMC XUV. My gate would go down but not swing open. In trying to fix it, the gate then refused to go to the flat position.I have removed the cover plate on the gate and found the one of the solenoids loose from its mounting. Resetting the computer by disconnecting both battery leads and holding them together for ten seconds worked to restore function to the gate going flat, but the swing still does not work. I believe it is a bad solenoid or motor for the bottem left latch pin.
