2001 X type 2.5Se Gearbox fault

I have had my car since feb08, it developed a whine when cold but only over 40mph, the garage i got it from couldn't work out why, it also has had a message in the message centre saying 'Gearbox fault Cruise control unavailable' it then goes into limp mode, If you switch off the ignition and wait for a few moments before restarting the problem rights itself. It doesn't do it all the time but it is a bit of a worry not know when it will do it next.
Anyone got any idea's???

I have the same problem here except mine sets as soon as you turn the key. Did you ever get your problem solved? The one we have is a 2002 AWD X-Type.

Recently developed a whinning when I first start to move

Where is the whining noise actually coming from .. engine/gearbox or elsewhere?
A whining/screeching noise could be a drive belt .. such as the belt that drives the alternator.

On a manual car it could be the clutch bearing making the noise until it warms up. Does the clutch make a noise when you depress the pedal? That's the thrust bearing .. the bearing that operates the clutch.

I don't think you have too much to worry about. If you had engine trouble there would be knocks, rumbles and strange noises at all speeds.

A whining noise is usually associated with something spinning/turning .. such as a pulley/idler on a drive belt or a bearing alternator.

Whenever this warning light or any other stays on in the dash it is indicating that the systems control module (or the system sensor in the case of lights like low oil pressure, door open indicators etc.) has detected a fault, it then disables the system (this applies to ABS,TCS, TCM, SRS and BCM faults and others) as long as the light is on. You must now have the dealer hook up a special electronic diagnostic tool and "scan" the system for the fault code that is stored for the problem(s)

Check the CV joints for sloppiness and if a rubber boot is torn, allowing road grit to enter, then replace the CV joint.

Hi your car is finding a fault at 40 mph and not storing the code when you cycle the ignition because its not there any more,if the Mil lamp comes on you need to get it to a garage to plug in while the ignition is still on,with a 2005 Jaguar you need dedicated software to interogate it properly and diagnose whats wrong.the most common problem is a boost pressure deviation

GEARBOX FAULT MESSAGE for jaguar s 2001

Replace transmission and sell quickly. I bought 2001 s-type in October 2008. I have not been able to drive it. 1st thing was gearbox fault message which turned out to be transmission. Ford can rebuild cheaper. Next thing to happen was all seals needed replacing. Then all coils needed to be replaced. Coils keep going out. Needs new computer which has 8 year/80000 mile warranty on, but Jag would not honor ($3000). Needless to say my pretty jag sits in the driveway. Had to get another car. Went with Lincoln LS V8. GREAT car!

Loss of all drive

My S-Type gearbox has given up the ghost. First there was a delay when setting off before car would move, then a whining noise started in gearbox and today in tries to stay in 2nd gear if I put my foot down there is no transmission. Then the gearbox fault light came on. Is it worth repairng and if not what will an new gearbox cost including fitting. I have sourced a secondhand box so how much time is needed to do a swap? thanks

There is a special additive lubricant for gear transmission to solve this problem. Just add on to gear oil. I had the same problem. now ok.
