rear disk brakes ,easly changed because the hand brake is inside the drum in the disk ,so just push out the pins and then push piston in on one side and renew pad then do the same on the other side of the piston .
Was the car primarily in a Southern state--no winters? If yes, it could be the wiring harness that leads to the rear wiper/stop light inside the rear tail gate. They usually break at the flex point, and short to the frame.
