I have a Pajero Sport GLS 2001 2.5TD model (Import), It has 69k miles and had timing belt changed at 57k. The issue I have is starting, intermittent power loss and stalling. On start up (car has new glow plugs) it takes ages to fire, then when it does, it takes about 30sec's to run smooth. Once running there is an intermittent loss of power in all gears, ranging from 900rpm up to approx. 3000rpm. This seems more noticeable when engine is up to running temperature. It has also just started stalling while running (this is manifested as loss of power then through to completer stall). I have changed the fuel filter and used injector cleaner, but has had little effect. Can anyone please advise on next steps to check...... Thanks.

SOURCE: timing belt broke bent valves

Hi!!This occurs when the ignition timing and fuel mixture are changed causing an excessive amount of heat. If the engine is running on a VERY lean or rich mixture, the temp will be so high to make the exhaust manifold glow red,. which would damage the catalytic converter making things worst.
You did not provide the vehicle's year and model, but, you should have DTCs stored in the PCM memory. Scan the computer for Trouble Codes and you'll find out if the mixture is in the lean or rich side and you can make the necessary adjustments. AutoZone, Checkers and similar auto parts stores let you borrow DTC Scanners.
Good Luck!! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.

I have a 2005 Explorer XLT with 66,000 miles. Is it advisable to change the timing belt at this time . The car is running great.

Does your motor have a timing belt or chain? If it is a belt and it was mostly highway running you should be able to get quite a few mor miles out of it. As a rule of thumb, city driving, jackrabbit starts, lots of cold weather driving(bellow -20f) and towing belt should be changed at around 80,000 miles. If is light duty driving 100,000 miles. If it is a chain you might never need to change it.

You would have to proceed like you were going to change the belt until you could see it to inspect it. Here is a link to instructions on inspecting and replacing it.

2004 Mitsubishi Montero Sport LS 65,000Miles. My belts seem to make a lot of annoying, loud sound. Especially after it rains. Is this a timing belt/chain issue or one of the other belts?

I have a 98 Montero Sport, whenever my belt sqeaks I check the tension and usually thats the problem. Tighten them accordingly and it should solve it. As for the timing belt, mine is a belt not chain. First time I had it changed was at 100,000 miles and the dealrship said I was cutting it close ><

Pajero

No, timing chains are not expected to be replaced periodically like belts. Ocassionally they get noisey at high mileages and require a new tensioner pad but usually the chain is OK with a new pad
