Good day, I drive a 2002 MK4 1.6 SR. The revs on the car are not stable especially when clutch is pressed in then the revs jump between 500 & 1000 for a couple of secs then eventually stabilise on 1100. Now it has gone worse, it now stalls everytime when the car is about to stop and when I start it I have to give it about 3 tries and have to rev it a couple of times to stabilise the revs. Any ideas what might be causing this & another when I start the car in the morning it realeses black smoke but it doesnt smoke after that. ***confused***

Hey.. i just had this exact problem in my GTI and after 2 weeks of trial and error, I had to replace my Coolant Temp Sensor.. it was bad so it threw off the fuel metering valve which was part of the crazy idling problem.. I cant be 100% sure because our cars are not exactly the same but I mean we have the EXACT same symptoms so .. justa suggestion. Use the VAG-COM sensor reader and you'll be golden.

Most newer model cars have a computer program that will not allow a car to be revved up past a set rpm while in park or neutral to protect the engine from damage. If it runs fine during normal driving operations then it is best to leave it alone.

sounds to me like your idiling too high

check for vacuum leaks and clean the throttle

It may be a few different problems but try this first.Take the air filter out and try the engine, then.If its a lot different the filter may be clogged.This will cost zero but may give you an answer.Hope this helps. PS dont go driving around without the air filter as it will damage the motor
